Why this page exists
Clamp guides almost universally skip throat depth — the distance from the bar to the jaw face. Throat depth determines whether a clamp can reach across a wide panel or whether it only works at the very edge. For panel glue-ups, buying clamps with inadequate throat depth means the clamping force doesn't reach the center, and the glue joint fails in the middle where you can't see it.

Bar Clamps Set
F-style clamps with a sliding head and screw mechanism. The workhorse of most shops. Available in 6–48 inch capacities. Check throat depth — budget bar clamps often have shallow throats (1–2 inch) that limit reach.
Parallel Clamps
Wide jaws that remain parallel throughout their travel — essential for panel glue-ups where you need even pressure across the joint width. Bessey K-body and Jet Parallel clamps are the standard references.
Pipe Clamps
Clamp fixtures that mount on standard ¾-inch black pipe. The pipe is the bar — buy fixtures and cut any length of pipe you need. Cost-effective for long glue-ups; common in pipe-based shop builds.
Quick-Grip Clamps
One-handed trigger-operated clamps for fast repositioning during assembly. Clamping force is lower than screw clamps — good for holding parts during layout and drilling, less so for glue joints under stress.
F-Clamps Woodworking
