Why this page exists
Used mixing console listings typically report on power-on status and cosmetic condition. They rarely tell you whether all 32 channels produce clean, matched output, whether the faders scratch when moved, or whether the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced since manufacture. A console that powers on can still have half its channels degraded.
The analog summing bus, the mic preamps, and the monitor section all interact differently depending on the console design. A Mackie 8-Bus is a different tool from a Soundcraft Ghost — not just in brand but in circuit architecture, headroom, and maintenance profile. This page covers those differences plainly.

Mackie 8-Bus / VLZ series
The 8-Bus (1604-VLZ, 2404-VLZ, 3204-VLZ) defined affordable studio mixing in the 1990s. Test all faders for smooth travel and all channels for clean output before buying.
Soundcraft series consoles
Series 200, 400, Ghost, TS12/24. British-character mic preamps and analog summing. Verify channel consistency and fader condition — scratchiness is common on aged units.
Tascam M-series
M-308, M-520, M-3500 and others. Built for multitrack integration with Tascam recorders. Test all direct outs, subgroups, and verify channel gain structure is consistent.
Vintage mixing consoles (large format)
For Neve, SSL, API, and Trident consoles. Large-format used market requires in-person inspection — do not buy sight-unseen without professional pre-purchase assessment.
