Guides
Circuit topology, revision history, T4 cell condition, rack standards — the technical depth that dealer listings omit.
Why this page exists
Vintage outboard gear listings on eBay range from accurately described originals to clones misrepresented as originals, reissues listed as vintage, and original units with undisclosed modifications. Knowing the difference between a revision D and revision H 1176 matters for both sound and value.
Software emulations of these units are technically impressive and practically useful. But the collector and professional markets for original hardware persist because the specific transformer saturation behavior, the T4 electroluminescent cell in the LA-2A, and the passive filter topology of the Pultec are not fully captured in software. This page covers the hardware, plainly.
Vintage outboard gear worth searching on eBay

UREI/Universal Audio 1176
FET-based limiting amplifier. Multiple revisions (A–H) with different transformers and circuits. Verify revision, check for all-buttons-in mode, confirm meters track correctly.
Teletronix LA-2A
Optical tube compressor. Gain reduction via T4 electroluminescent/photoresistor cell. T4 cells age and can be replaced; verify compression response is smooth and tracks correctly.
Pultec EQP-1A
Passive inductor-capacitor equalizer with separate boost and attenuate controls. Tube makeup gain stage. Verify all inductor taps function and tube complement is original or known-good.
dbx 160 / 165 compressor
VCA-based compressor. The 160 uses an early dbx VCA chip; the 165 adds sidechain filtering. Known for transparency and speed. Check VCA chip functionality and meter calibration.
Vintage rack compressors (broad)
Catches API 2500, Neve 33609, SSL G-series, Empirical Labs, and others. Good for finding professional-grade compression at varying collector premiums.
