Vintage drum machine content online tends to be either hagiography (the 808 changed everything!) or dealer listings without technical context. Neither tells you what to look for when buying a used unit.

The difference between an original Roland TR-808 with corroded battery contacts and a clean unit with fresh elastomers is significant — but only if you know what to check. The same applies to sample chip availability on a LinnDrum or the hybrid circuit design of the TR-909. This page covers that ground plainly.
