Why this page exists
Pitcher filter content splits into two unhelpful piles: vague brand comparisons that don't compare specs, and manufacturer pages that conveniently omit filter replacement costs. Neither tells you whether a pitcher's capacity and filter life actually fit your household.
A 5-cup pitcher and a 10-cup pitcher both say "removes chlorine taste" on the box, but their true daily cost and contaminant scope are completely different. This page explains the specs that determine which one is worth buying.

Water filter pitcher
Standard pitcher format. Look for NSF 42 (taste/odor) or NSF 53 (lead/cysts) certification. Filter capacity and replacement cost vary significantly by brand.
Large water filter pitcher
10-cup and above. Families of 3+ typically need a pitcher that holds 10โ18 cups to avoid constant refilling. Check whether the large reservoir fits in your fridge door.
Alkaline water pitcher
Uses mineral-infusion media to raise pH. Typically targets pH 8โ9.5. The alkaline benefit claim is debated; more useful is that many also include carbon block filtration.
Water pitcher filter replacement
Replacement filters are the real ongoing cost. Most standard filters last 40โ150 gallons (roughly 2โ6 months for an average family). Verify compatibility before buying.
10-cup water filter pitcher
The sweet spot for a household of 2โ4. 10-cup models hold about 80 oz of filtered water โ enough for a day's drinking without constant refilling, and usually fridge-door compatible.
