Why this page exists

Whole-house filter content online tends to either oversimplify ("just get a 3-stage system") or overwhelm with water chemistry without connecting it to what to actually buy. Neither explains how micron rating and flow rate interact, or how to size a system for your household's peak demand.

A 1-micron sediment filter and a 20-micron filter are both labeled "sediment filters," but they behave very differently under flow and have very different maintenance intervals. This page explains what the numbers mean before you buy.
