Guides
Practical growing guides — bed selection, soil science, and the tools that actually matter.
Why this page exists
Most beginner vegetable gardening content falls into two traps: either it's so generic it tells you nothing actionable, or it's written to sell you a specific kit. Neither helps you make the bed-type and soil-prep decisions that actually determine success.
The real choice — in-ground beds versus raised beds versus containers — depends on your soil quality, your climate, your budget, and how much you want to till. This page covers the variables plainly so you can decide for your situation.
Vegetable gardening gear worth searching on eBay
Raised beds, quality soil, seeds, and the hand tools that last. We earn a small commission on qualifying sales; your price is unchanged. Full disclosure.
Raised garden bed kit
Cedar or galvanized-steel kits that assemble without tools. Look for boards at least 2 inches thick for longevity; 8–12 inch depth suits most crops.
Vegetable garden seeds
Seed collections and variety packs. Heirloom, open-pollinated seeds let you save seed season to season; check germination rates and days-to-maturity for your climate.
Garden soil mix
Bagged raised-bed mixes with compost, perlite, and topsoil. Avoid mixes that are mostly peat without amendment — they compact and repel water when dry.
Garden hand tool set
Trowel, transplanter, cultivator, and weeder sets. Forged steel heads outlast stamped metal; look for ash or FSC hardwood handles over hollow-steel alternatives.
Garden kneeler seat
Converts from kneeling pad to low seat. Foam-padded models with fold-up handles for standing support. Overlooked until you spend a full afternoon planting.
