Why this page exists
Retro console listings range from honest to aggressively misleading. "Tested and working" means different things to different sellers — and a Dreamcast with a failing GD-ROM will boot and display the menu before dying on disc read. A Saturn with a dead RTC battery is a $5 fix, not a broken console. Knowing which questions to ask before bidding saves money and disappointment.

Sega Saturn working
Multiple motherboard revisions (VA0 through VA15). The RTC (real-time clock) battery is separate from the backup RAM battery and commonly dead — a cheap fix. Disc drive lasers age; request a disc read test before buying.
Dreamcast console
The GD-ROM drive is the key failure point — it reads discs but the laser degrades with age. A working Dreamcast that reads GD-ROMs reliably commands a premium. The GDEMU ODE (optical drive emulator) is the established replacement for dead drives.
PlayStation 1 PS1
SCPH model number on the bottom identifies the revision — early SCPH-1000/1001 through late SCPH-9000. Modchip presence affects value. The early SCPH-1000 produces composite and mono audio only; later models add stereo RCA output.
Nintendo 64 console
The N64 outputs a blurry composite signal by default. RGB mods (Tim Worthington board, Borti4938 flex cable) significantly improve image quality. A modded N64 typically commands a 50–150% premium over stock depending on the mod quality.
Sega Genesis Model 1
Model 1 (1989–1993) uses the discrete YM2612 FM sound chip. Model 2 substituted a cost-reduced integrated chip with audibly different output for some tracks. For authentic FM audio, Model 1 with the headphone jack output is the preference of audio-focused collectors.
