Why your fishing reel won't cast, won't reel, or the drag slips — it's the line, the washers, and the salt, not a broken reel

You got up before work, drove out for the morning bite, made your third cast — and the reel bloomed into a nest of loops. Or you set the hook and the handle spun backward in your hand. Or the drag grabbed, let go, grabbed again, and a good fish broke off. Almost everyone reads one of those as "the reel's shot" and starts shopping — and that's the expensive mistake, because a fishing reel is one of the most repairable things you own. It does exactly three jobs: it lets line out, it brings line in, and it gives line up under load. Every failure is a failure of one of those three, and which job broke points straight at a cheap, orderable part — a spool of line, a bail spring, a set of drag washers, a rinse. Here's how to read which job failed before you spend a cent on a new reel.

Here's the sentence that reorganizes the whole panic, and no "best spinning reels of 2026" list will ever lead with it because it doesn't sell you a reel: a fishing reel only does three things — it lets line out when you cast, it winds line in when you retrieve, and it lets line slip under load through the drag — so every problem you'll ever have is a failure of exactly one of those three jobs, and the symptom tells you which.

Casting problems — loops, wind knots, a spool that won't release line cleanly — live in job one, and job one is mostly about the line and how it was put on, not the reel. Retrieve problems — the bail won't stay shut, the handle spins the wrong way, line doesn't pick up — live in job two, and they trace to two or three small, replaceable parts. Drag problems — slipping, grabbing, or a drag that's gone dead and won't hold at all — live in job three, and that's a stack of washers you can clean or swap for a few dollars. And running underneath all three is the one thing that genuinely kills reels: salt and sand left sitting in the mechanism. The gears and the body — the parts you can't buy at the tackle shop — are almost always the last things to fail. Read the symptom, land on the job, and you've narrowed a "dead reel" to a part that costs less than a pack of hooks.

Job one: it won't cast right (loops, wind knots, line jumping off)

This is the most-misdiagnosed reel failure there is, because the reel feels possessed — every cast blooms into a nest — and yet the reel is almost never the problem. On a spinning reel, three things cause it, and none of them is a broken reel.

The spool is overfilled — the single most common cause

A spinning spool is designed to be filled to about ⅛ inch below the lip of the spool, and no more. Fill it to the rim "to get more line on," and the line has nothing holding it against the edge; on every cast a coil flops over the lip and you get loops (Mystery Tackle Box). This is the trap that feels like generosity and punishes you all day. The fix is free-ish: strip line off until it sits a hair below the lip. Under-filling is safer than over-filling, always.

The line has memory — old, cheap, or badly loaded mono

Monofilament "remembers" the shape of the spool. After a season in the sun, or straight off a cheap bulk spool, mono holds tight coils that spring off the reel in slinky loops no casting technique can tame. If your line is stiff, coiling in your hand, or discolored, it's aged out — and a fresh spool of quality mono (or a switch to braid, which has almost no memory) fixes "my reel tangles constantly" more often than any repair. How you load it matters too: mono should come off the filler spool the same way it goes onto the reel, or you spin twist into it before you ever cast.

You're closing the bail with the handle

This one is a habit, not a part. When you finish a cast and crank the handle to flip the bail shut, the rotor drags the line across the closing bail and lays a half-twist into your line every single cast. Do it a hundred times and the line is a corkscrew that throws loops on its own. The fix costs nothing and lasts forever: after each cast, close the bail by hand with a flick of your finger, then reel. Practitioners who never get wind knots almost all do this without thinking about it.

Two free casting fixes before you touch a tool: (1) Drop the fill level. Strip line until it sits ⅛ inch below the spool lip — overfilling is the number-one cause of loops. (2) Close the bail by hand. Stop letting the handle snap it shut; flip it with your finger. If loops persist after both, the line itself is old and memory-coiled — respool with fresh line before you ever suspect the reel. To dump the twist already in your line, let all of it out behind a moving boat (or downstream in current) with no lure and reel it back under light tension.

If it's a baitcaster: the backlash is the tension knob, not a broken reel

Baitcasters get their own version of this, and beginners condemn a perfectly good reel over it constantly. A backlash — the "bird's nest" — happens when the spool spins faster than the line is leaving it, so line keeps unwinding after the lure has slowed. That's not a fault; it's tuning. Set the spool tension knob (the dial under the handle-side plate) so that with your lure tied on and the rod held level, when you thumb the spool free the lure falls slowly and the spool stops the moment the lure hits the ground — it shouldn't keep spinning and overrun (Lew's / Denny Brauer). Then let the braking system and your thumb do the fine control. A baitcaster that "backlashes every cast" is a baitcaster that was never tuned to its lure, not a broken one.

Job two: it won't retrieve right (bail won't close, handle spins backward)

Now the line's fine but the winding side is wrong. This is where the small, genuinely replaceable parts live — and they're the cheapest parts in the whole machine.

The bail won't snap shut, or won't stay closed — it's the bail spring

If the bail flops, hesitates, or won't hold closed, the culprit is almost always the bail spring — a little torsion spring under the bail arm that snaps it home. It's one of the most common wear parts on a spinning reel, it's a couple of dollars, and it's in every manufacturer's parts schematic for your model. Before you even replace it, try the free step: a hesitating bail often just needs the joints cleaned and a drop of oil worked in by opening and closing the bail several times (Alan Hawk's reel maintenance guide). If a drop of oil doesn't restore a clean snap, the spring is tired — order the part, not the reel.

The handle spins backward against a fish — it's the anti-reverse, usually just gummy

You set the hook, the fish pulls, and the handle spins backward in your hand with no resistance. That's the anti-reverse — a one-way clutch (on modern reels, an "instant anti-reverse" roller bearing) that's supposed to let the handle turn only forward. When it fails, it's dramatic and feels terminal, but the overwhelmingly common cause isn't a broken clutch — it's old, thick grease or oil gumming the tiny rollers so they can't wedge and grip (Master Fishing Magazine). The fix is a clean and a correct, light lubricant on that bearing — not a new reel. (Some older reels also have an anti-reverse on/off switch on the bottom; check it hasn't been flipped off before anything else.)

Line doesn't pick up onto the spool — the line roller is fouled

If you close the bail and reel but the line isn't laying onto the spool, or it's grinding, the small line roller on the bail is jammed with dried salt, grit, or old grease and won't spin. That roller absorbs an enormous amount of salt because it's where wet line meets metal every second you retrieve (Salt Strong). Free it up, clean it, put a drop of oil on it. A frozen line roller also quietly adds line twist all day — so this one masquerades as a casting problem too.

Job three: the drag is wrong (slipping, grabbing, or dead)

The drag is the part people understand least and blame most. It is simply a stack of washers — alternating metal and fiber discs — squeezed together under the spool by the drag knob. Tighten the knob, more squeeze, more resistance; back it off, less. Everything that "goes wrong" with drag is something wrong with those washers, and washers are a service part.

Jerky, grabbing drag ("stick-slip") — dried or wrong-greased washers

The dangerous failure: the drag doesn't pay out smoothly, it lurches — grip, release, grip — and that shock is exactly what pops a leader on a good fish. That stutter is dried-out drag washers, or washers greased with the wrong lubricant. The fix is to pull the spool, clean the stack, and apply the correct drag grease made for the purpose — not general reel grease and definitely not oil, which can make fiber washers slip unpredictably. A smoothed-out, correctly-greased stack turns a jerky drag buttery again for the price of a small tube of grease.

Drag that's gone dead — won't hold even cranked down

If the knob is all the way down and the spool still slips too easily, the washers are worn flat or glazed — or, very often, they were reassembled in the wrong order after someone opened the reel. The stack alternates by design; get the sequence wrong and the drag never works right. A fresh washer set (again, in the parts schematic, a few dollars) and correct reassembly restore it. This is a repair, not a replacement.

The one habit that ruins more drags than anything else: storing the reel with the drag cranked tight. Left compressed for weeks, drag washers take a permanent set and lose their smoothness — so after every trip, back the drag knob off until the spool turns freely, and only set it again when you fish (The Fisherman). This costs nothing and doubles the life of a drag. A "worn out" drag on a reel that's stored cranked down was very likely killed by the storage, not the fishing.

How to actually set the drag (so it stops "failing" when it isn't)

Half of "my drag is wrong" is a drag that was never set right. The rule practitioners use: set the drag to roughly a quarter to a third of your line's breaking strength — measured, not guessed. Salt Water Sportsman's numbers: for monofilament up to 20-lb test, about 20% of breaking strength; heavier mono, 25–30%; for braid up to 20-lb, about 15%, scaling up with heavier braid (Salt Water Sportsman). The honest way to hit it: tie your line to a hanging spring scale, pull, and adjust the knob until the drag starts to slip at that poundage. A drag "set by feel" is usually cranked far too tight — which reads as "no give, then a break-off" and gets blamed on the reel.

The thing that actually kills reels: salt and sand you didn't rinse

Everything above is a cheap fix because reels are built to be serviced. But there is one way to genuinely destroy a reel, and it's not fishing hard — it's neglect after a saltwater trip. Salt crystals left inside corrode bearings and gears; beach and boat-deck sand grinds them. That's the failure that eventually reaches the parts you can't easily replace.

The care that prevents it is almost embarrassingly simple, and one detail matters enormously: rinse a saltwater reel after every outing with a gentle, low-pressure stream of fresh water — never a high-pressure hose. This is the mistake that feels like thoroughness and does the damage: a pressure blast drives salt water past the seals and deep into the drag and bearings, doing the exact harm the rinse was meant to prevent (Alan Hawk). A light rinse, a spin of the line roller under the water, a wipe-down, and let it dry with the drag backed off. Freshwater-only reels rarely need more than a wipe unless they took a dunk in mud.

A note for the Mid-Atlantic surf and back-bay crowd: if you fish the Delaware and Jersey surf, Indian River Inlet, Barnegat Bay, or the Cape May rips, you are handing your reel the two things that actually kill it — salt and sand — on every trip. The anglers whose reels last a decade aren't buying pricier reels; they're rinsing gently and backing the drag off the same evening, every time. The honest heart of it: reels are one of the most repairable things you own

Here's what's different about this category, and why "buy a new one" is so often the wrong answer. Reel manufacturers publish free exploded parts schematics for their reels, and the parts that fail — bail springs, drag washers, line rollers, handle knobs, bearings, clips — are stocked as inexpensive service parts. A reel is closer to a bicycle than a smartphone: designed to be opened, cleaned, and rebuilt, with a whole ecosystem of guides and part numbers to help you do it.
