Here is the sentence no "best electric kettle" roundup will ever open with, because it sells nothing: an electric kettle doesn't know your water is hot. It knows when steam arrives, and it knows when its own metal plate is overheating — and that's it. Two sensors, both bimetallic snap-discs, both sitting outside the water, each answering a different question. The first sensor is the steam switch. When the water boils, steam rushes up and down a hidden channel — usually built into the handle — to a small bimetallic disc near the base. The disc is not in the water and is not tripped by water temperature; it's tripped by the sudden rush of ~100°C steam, which makes it snap and cut the power (Royal Academy of Engineering, Ingenia). That elegant little control — invented by John C. Taylor and produced by the billion by Strix and Otter Controls — is the "off" in every kettle you've owned. The second sensor is the boil-dry (overheat) cutout: a separate bimetallic protector pressed against the underside of the heating plate, there to kill the power if the plate ever runs dry or overheats, entirely independent of the steam switch.
And here's the piece almost nobody connects, the thing that reorganizes the whole problem: the lever you press to turn the kettle on is mechanically latched by that same steam switch. You're not flipping a simple power switch — you're cocking a spring that the steam switch is holding down, and that steam later releases. If the steam switch trips on steam arriving through a channel, then anything that lets the steam escape before it gets there means the switch never fires and the kettle just keeps boiling.
The lid isn't fully closed
This is the number-one cause, and it's free. The steam channel draws from the sealed space above the water; a lid left ajar, propped by a bit of scale, or not clicked fully shut lets the steam vent straight out the top instead of down the channel. The switch waits for a signal that never comes. People notice their kettle only switches off if the lid is closed and assume that's a quirk — it's the entire mechanism (discussion of the lid effect). The spout filter is missing, or the steam path is scaled up
Some designs rely on the spout being screened so steam is directed down the channel rather than lost out the spout; a missing or dislodged spout filter can defeat the auto shut-off, and simply refitting it can restore the cutoff (iFixit repair answer). The mirror-image failure is a steam channel or the disc itself furred with limescale or lightly corroded, so the signal arrives too weak or too late. Refit the spout filter, and if the channel is visibly scaled, descale the whole kettle (below) — that often revives a shut-off that had slowly stopped working.
"It clicks off before it boils" — that's scale, not a dying element
The kettle comes on, heats for a bit, then clicks off well before a real boil — and you have to push the lever two or three times to get there, if at all. The instinct is "the element's failing." It's almost always the opposite of failing: it's the element being smothered.
Limescale — the chalky mineral crust hard water leaves behind — builds up as a layer directly on the heating plate. That layer insulates the element, so the metal plate under it overheats locally even though the water above is still cool. The overheat cutout senses that false hot spot and trips early, cutting off long before the water reaches a boil (Crownful support). It reads exactly like a weak, dying kettle; it's actually a healthy element wearing a blanket.
The fix is a descale, and it's the single highest-value thing you can do for a kettle:
- Fill with a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water (or a spoon of citric acid in water — citric acid smells better and rinses cleaner), enough to cover the plate and any scale line.
- Bring it toward a boil if it will let you, then switch off and let it sit 30–60 minutes. The acid dissolves the carbonate crust.
- Tip it out, then rinse and boil a plain full kettle once or twice and discard that water before you drink anything from it.

"It won't turn on at all" — seating, the boil-dry latch, then the outlet
Dead silent, no light, nothing when you press the lever. Work these in order — cheapest and most common first.
1. It isn't seated squarely on the base
A cordless kettle takes power through a single central connector — the round contact it drops onto, a 360° Strix-type connector — and if the kettle isn't sitting flat and centered, the contacts don't meet and no power flows. It looks completely dead. Lift it off, set it back down firmly until it seats, and make sure nothing (a crumb, a warped trivet, a puddle that dried to grit) is holding it off the contact. Try the base in a different, known-live outlet too, in case the outlet is the dead thing, not the kettle.
2. The boil-dry cutout has latched off
If the kettle was ever switched on with too little water — or boiled dry because the auto shut-off wasn't working — the boil-dry protector will have tripped and it stays tripped until it cools. It won't come back on while it's hot, which fools people into thinking it died at the exact moment it was actually protecting itself. The reset is deliberately simple: take the kettle off its base, fill it with cold water, let it cool for a few minutes, then set it back and switch on. 3. Now — and only now — suspect the kettle itself
If it's seated on a live outlet, cooled and refilled, and still nothing, then you're into a genuine internal fault: a failed element, a failed thermal cutout stuck open, or a broken connection in the switch or base. The honest heart of it: what actually wears, and when a kettle is genuinely done
Everything above fixes the large majority of "dead" kettles for free or for the cost of a bottle of vinegar. But it's worth being straight about the category, because it changes how you treat the next one.
A kettle is a heating element, two snap-disc thermostats, a switch, and a jug. There's very little to go wrong, and the two things that actually do are: scale (reversible, free) and, eventually, a truly failed element or cutout (not reversible on a sealed unit). Unlike a phone or a toothbrush, there's no battery quietly dying on a clock. Most kettles that get thrown out were killed by scale and impatience, not by age.
The place honesty has to win over habit is the descale step. It is genuinely the difference between a kettle lasting a year and lasting a decade — scale that's left to bake on doesn't just slow the kettle, it makes the element run hotter under its blanket and shortens its real life. A five-minute descale a few times a year is the whole maintenance story.
When it is honestly time to replace:
- The element or cutout has truly failed — seated on a live outlet, cooled and refilled, descaled, and it still won't heat — and it's a sealed, glued budget unit that can't be opened. At that point a new kettle is the honest answer, not a defeat.

Two "faults" that aren't faults

- It's noisier partway through heating, then quietens near the boil.
