Why this page exists

Dog crate marketing relies heavily on breed-name sizing charts that are often 20–30% off for individual dogs of the same breed. A male German Shepherd can range from 65 to 95 lbs; putting both in the same "large" crate is not the same experience. The right crate size comes from measuring the dog, not looking up the breed.

The type decision — wire, plastic, heavy-duty, or furniture — is equally muddled by marketing. Each type is genuinely better for specific situations, and buying the wrong type means a crate that either doesn't fit your use case or that your dog escapes from.
