Why this page exists

Bird feeder marketing is full of species diversity claims that depend heavily on what you put in the feeder and where you put it. A beautiful copper hopper feeder filled with mixed "wild bird seed" will attract mostly house sparrows and starlings — not the cardinals and finches pictured on the box. The feeder type and seed type together determine the result, not just the feeder alone.

Squirrel-proofing is the other underexplained category. Baffles, caged feeders, and weight-sensitive mechanisms each work in specific contexts.
