Here is the sentence that sorts almost every floor-jack complaint, and almost no troubleshooting page states it first: a hydraulic floor jack doesn't lift with a motor, a spring, or your muscle — it lifts with a trapped column of oil, and the only reason that works is that liquid can't be squeezed. When you pump the handle, you're not "pushing the car up." You're forcing a small amount of oil under a big piston, and because the oil refuses to compress, every bit of that push turns into lift. That's the whole trick — Pascal's principle, the same one behind every hydraulic brake and lift on earth.
Which means the jack has exactly one mortal enemy: air. Air is compressible. Get even a little of it into the oil and the pump now spends its effort squeezing the bubble smaller instead of moving the piston. The result feels exactly like a "weak" or "worn-out" jack — spongy handle, won't reach full height, sometimes won't lift at all — when nothing is worn out. There's just a bubble where there should be oil.
So before you diagnose anything, watch what the saddle actually does and answer one question:
- Does it refuse to rise? Won't lift, only goes partway, or feels spongy and bounces as you pump → the problem is upstream, on the pump side, and it's almost always air in the system (or low oil, or the release valve not fully closed). You bleed it. Free.
- Does it rise fine, then slowly sink under the car's weight? → the pump is doing its job; oil is leaking back where it shouldn't. That's the sealing side — usually a speck of grit on the release-valve seat (flushable) or a worn cup seal (a few-dollar rebuild kit). Still not a new jack.
Two symptoms at opposite ends of the same loop of oil. Notice what's on neither list: the pump's power, the jack's brand, its tonnage. A bigger, stronger, more expensive jack fixes none of this, because none of it is a strength problem. Let's take the two ends one at a time.
Won't lift or feels spongy: it's air, and you bleed it out for free
This is the one that sends the most working jacks to the curb, and it's the most satisfying to fix because the fix costs nothing. A jack that "lost its power" — rises a little and stalls, or pumps with a soft, springy feel like there's a cushion under the handle — is the textbook signature of air trapped in the hydraulic system. Editors and repair shops say it plainly: the most common reason a floor jack gets stuck part-way up (or won't lift at all) is air trapped in the pump.
How did air get in there? Usually one of three ordinary things: the jack was stored or hauled around on its side, letting air migrate up into the pump; the oil got low, so the pump started drawing in air along with oil; or the jack is simply old enough that a little air has worked its way in over years of use. None of these is damage. All of them are cured by the same move — bleeding the air back out to the reservoir.
How to bleed a floor jack (the two-minute version)
The exact wording varies by brand, but every manufacturer's bleed procedure is a version of the same four moves. Do it with the jack out from under any vehicle, on the bench or the floor:
- Open the release valve. Turn the handle counter-clockwise (usually a full turn or so, until it stops) to open the valve fully — this connects the pump back to the reservoir so trapped air can escape upward.
- Pump the handle fast, 10–15 full strokes. With the valve open, the pumping won't lift anything — it's circulating oil and pushing the air out of the pump chamber and back to the reservoir.
- Close the release valve (turn it clockwise until snug — snug, not gorilla-tight; more on that below) and run the jack up to full extension with nothing on it.
- Lower it and repeat if needed. Open the valve to drop the saddle, and if the lift still feels soft, run the whole cycle once or twice more until it comes up firm and reaches full height. That firmness returning is the confirmation the air is gone.
If bleeding doesn't do it: check the oil (and don't overfill it)
The next-cheapest cause is simply low hydraulic oil — not enough fluid in the reservoir to fill the pump on each stroke, so it can't build pressure. Top it up to the level your manual specifies, with the right fluid (see the warning below), and bleed again.
But here's the counterintuitive trap people fall into: more oil is not more power. The reservoir needs an air space above the oil for fluid to return into when the jack lowers. Fill it to the brim "to be safe" and there's nowhere for the returning oil to go — and an overfilled jack won't lift properly either. So you can create the exact "won't lift" symptom you were trying to cure by topping it up too far. Fill to the manual's mark, not past it.
Lifts fine, then slowly sinks: the leak-back, not a death sentence
Now the opposite symptom, and the scarier one: the jack lifts the car with no trouble, holds for a moment, and then the saddle slowly creeps down under the weight. This one feels like the jack is dying — and it's the reason the whole safety rule below exists — but mechanically it is rarely a reason to scrap the tool. The pump is clearly fine; it built the pressure. The problem is that pressurized oil is leaking back past something that's supposed to hold it, and there are only two usual culprits:
- The release valve isn't sealing. When you "close" the valve, a small hardened ball or cone seats against a machined seat to trap the oil under the piston. If a speck of grit or varnish lands on that seat, the valve can't seal, and oil weeps back past it — the car settles. This is often the whole problem, and it's frequently flushable: cycling the valve open and closed a few times, or a clean-oil change, can wash the debris off the seat and restore the seal. No parts.
- A worn cup seal. The rubber seals (U-cups / O-rings) that separate the high-pressure side from the low-pressure side harden and wear with age, and once one bypasses, pressurized oil sneaks past it and the jack won't hold. This is a genuine wear part — but the fix is a seal / O-ring rebuild kit sold for that jack, usually a few dollars, not a new jack.
The 60-second hold test
To tell "it was just air/low oil" from "it's the sealing side," do this with jack stands under the vehicle as a catch (never trust the jack alone — see below): lift a known load a few inches, note the saddle height, and leave it one minute. Holds rock-steady = the valve and seals are fine, and your earlier "won't lift" was the air/oil story from the top of this page. Creeps down = it's the leak-back, and you're into flushing the release valve first, then a seal kit if flushing doesn't hold. Either way you've spent nothing to know which repair you actually need.
What actually "died" — and why the repair is so cheap
Line up the failure modes and the pattern is unmistakable: the two most common — air in the oil and low oil — cost nothing to fix. The next two — a fouled release-valve seat and a worn cup seal — are a flush or a few-dollar rebuild kit. The pump, the ram, the frame, the tonnage — the expensive, structural parts of the jack — almost never fail on their own. A floor jack is a simple, rugged pump moving an incompressible fluid, and simple rugged things don't die easily. What "dies" is a bubble that shouldn't be there and a seal that costs less than a coffee.
That's the whole argument of this page. The expensive mistake is reading "spongy" or "won't hold" as "the jack is dead," and buying a new one to fix a problem the old one never really had.

The one place "just live with it" can kill you
Everywhere else on this site, "eh, it's a bit finicky, I'll manage" is fine. Not here. A hydraulic floor jack is a lifting device, not a supporting device — even a perfect one can develop a slow leak, and a jack that sinks is that risk made visible. Never get under a vehicle held up only by a jack, no matter the brand or price. Lift with the jack, then set the load down onto rated jack stands that hold mechanically, with no oil involved to leak. A slowly sinking jack isn't just an annoyance to fix later — it's the tool telling you exactly why the jack-stands rule exists.
When it really is a repair — or a replacement
Air and a cheap seal explain the overwhelming majority of "dead" floor jacks, but not every one. Treat it as a genuine end-of-life when:
- The frame or lift arm is bent or cracked, or a wheel/swivel has seized from being overloaded or having a car dropped on it. Structural damage on a lifting tool is never a DIY patch — retire it. This is the one failure where "replace it" is the safe answer, not the lazy one.
- It still won't build or hold pressure after you've bled it, confirmed the oil level and type, flushed the release valve, and fitted a fresh seal kit. At that point an internal fault (a scored ram, a failed overload/bypass valve that just whooshes and never builds pressure) can make a rebuild not worth it — especially on an inexpensive jack where a seal kit approaches the cost of a new tool.
- It's simply the wrong jack for the job.
