Why this page exists
Car cover marketing leads with "waterproof" as a premium feature. In reality, a fully waterproof non-breathable cover traps condensation inside and causes the exact paint damage — water spots, mildew — that buyers were trying to prevent. Breathability is more important than waterproofing for most real-world uses.
Similarly, universal-fit covers are marketed as convenient and affordable, but a cover that pools loose fabric between the door mirrors and windshield flaps in wind creates micro-abrasion across the clear coat. Fit matters. This page explains why, and what to look for instead.

Waterproof car cover
Multi-layer covers with a water-resistant outer layer and breathable inner. True waterproof non-breathable covers are only appropriate for very short-term use (single storm event). For week+ storage, look for breathable outer with water-resistance rating.
Outdoor car cover
Designed for continuous outdoor exposure: UV-stabilized outer layer, multiple plies for weather resistance, elastic or tie-down securement. Look for covers with UV block ratings if sun fading or heat buildup is your primary concern.
Custom car cover
Made for a specific make, model, and year. Fit around mirrors, spoilers, antenna, and body lines. Minimal bunching = no flapping in wind = no micro-abrasion. Significantly better paint protection than universal for long-term storage.
SUV car cover

All-weather car cover
Multi-layer covers designed for rain, UV, dust, and bird debris year-round. Better products in this category use a soft inner liner to protect paint, a water-resistant mid-layer, and UV-resistant outer fabric.
