Why this page exists
Airsoft buying content focuses heavily on brand names and FPS numbers. Neither tells you that a $150 AEG with a V2 gearbox and decent hop-up will outperform a $300 spring sniper at CQB, or why gearbox version matters more than the outer body material.
This page explains the platform differences at a mechanical level so you can match your buy to your playstyle — and understand what "upgradeable" actually means before you sink money into a platform that hits a ceiling at stock internals.

AEG Airsoft Rifle
Electric-powered (battery), semi and full-auto, gear-driven. Most upgradeable platform. V2 gearbox (M4/M16 format) most widely supported. Best all-around choice for new and intermediate players.
Gas Blowback Rifle (GBBR)
Gas-powered with realistic bolt carrier cycling. Requires propane or green gas. More realistic feel than AEG but temperature-sensitive and higher maintenance. Preferred by milsim players.
Gas Blowback Pistol (GBB)
Compact sidearm with realistic slide cycling. Green gas or CO2 magazines. Tokyo Marui Hi-Capa and Glock 17/18C platforms have extensive aftermarket support. Common CQB/backup weapon.
Airsoft BBs 0.20g–0.28g
BB weight affects trajectory, accuracy, and effective range. 0.20g for chrono-ing; 0.25–0.28g for field AEG accuracy; 0.30–0.40g for sniper rifles and HPA. Use quality seamless BBs only.
Airsoft LiPo Battery
7.4V LiPo (2S) increases trigger response and ROF vs NiMH in most stock AEGs; 11.1V (3S) requires upgraded mosfet and motor — don't run 11.1V on a stock gearbox without protection.
