Here's the reframe that reorganizes almost every "my video doorbell is defective" complaint, and the marketing goes out of its way not to say it: a video doorbell has to do a computer's job on a doorbell's budget. Behind that little lens is a Wi-Fi radio, a processor, an always-listening motion sensor, an LED ring, a speaker, and a microphone — all running continuously, powered by either a battery you can't see or a pair of thin bell wires that were run decades ago to make a chime go "ding-dong" twice a day. And it lives in the single worst spot in your house for both of the things it needs: it's the device farthest from your router, on the far side of an exterior wall, and it's bolted outside where January does what January does. So when it goes quiet, the honest first question is not "what broke inside the camera?" It's which utility starved — the signal, or the power? Nearly every time, that's the whole diagnosis, and neither answer is "buy another doorbell."
First, the honest safety line (it's short)
Almost nothing on this page is dangerous — that's rather the point. The low-voltage bell wires at the doorbell itself carry only the small AC voltage the doorbell runs on, and handling them, the battery, or the doorbell is safe. There are exactly two places to be careful:
Read the drop — the pattern names which supply starved
Don't start swapping hardware. Start by matching how your doorbell misbehaves to one of three families. The pattern of the failure tells you which of the two invisible supplies is short, and that collapses a dozen possible causes down to one place to look.
Family A — it drops offline, comes back, drops again (a signal problem)
The classic tell: it's intermittent. It shows offline in the app, then it's fine, then a notification is late or a clip is missing, then it's offline again — and it's often worse when there's a lot going on (a live view plus a recording plus an upload all at once). This is Wi-Fi, not the camera. Your doorbell is the most signal-starved device you own: it's the farthest thing from the router, and there's usually an exterior wall — brick, stucco, or stone on a lot of older homes — sitting right between them.
- Check the actual signal at the doorbell, not at your phone. Every major app reports the doorbell's own signal strength (an RSSI number). As a widely-cited rule of thumb, around -40 dBm is excellent, and anything worse than about -65 to -70 dBm means the doorbell is struggling and will drop out — even if the router shows "full bars" ten feet away on the inside of that wall (per Ring's own "fixing offline devices" guidance and iFixit). The bars on your phone are measured where you're standing, not where the doorbell is.
- Put it on the 2.4 GHz band, not 5 GHz. This is the single most common free fix. The 2.4 GHz band is slower but travels much farther and punches through walls far better than 5 GHz — exactly the trade a device on the outside of the house needs. Many doorbells prefer or require 2.4 GHz for this reason.
- Get the signal to the door. The honest fix for a thick wall isn't a new doorbell — it's moving the router toward the front of the house, or adding a mesh node / Wi-Fi extender / the manufacturer's own signal booster somewhere between the router and the door. You're not fixing the camera; you're extending the utility line to where it's needed.
- Reduce the interference. The 2.4 GHz band is crowded — microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, and every neighbor's Wi-Fi share it. Setting your router's 2.4 GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11 (the three that don't overlap) and rebooting the router and modem clears a surprising amount of "random" dropping.
Family B — it was fine, now it won't stay charged, dies, or reboots (a power problem, and often the cold)
The tell here is decline, not flicker: the battery drains faster than it used to, a "wired" doorbell slowly loses charge and then goes dark, or the unit reboots during a live view. And the giant clue almost nobody connects: it started with the first hard cold snap. If your doorbell "dies every January," it isn't wearing out on a yearly schedule — it's running into physics.
- The cold isn't damaging it — it's stopping the charge, by design. Lithium-ion batteries begin losing performance around 36 °F, and video doorbells are built to stop charging below freezing on purpose, to protect the cell — this is a documented safety behavior, not a fault (per Ring's cold-weather / extreme-temperature guidance). So a battery doorbell facing a Mid-Atlantic cold stretch keeps recording all day (every car, every pedestrian, every gust that moves a branch) while its ability to refill is switched off. It empties, and you read that as a defect. Once it warms up and recharges, it's completely normal again.
- The fastest winter fix costs nothing: pull the battery and charge it inside. Most battery doorbells have a removable pack. Bring it into a warm room, charge it fully, and pop it back — or, better, keep a second pack on the charger so you can swap and never have a gap. This is the honest answer to "my doorbell won't charge in the cold": you charge it where it isn't cold.
- If it's a wired doorbell that still won't stay up — read the next section carefully. This is the most misdiagnosed situation in the whole category, and it deserves its own explanation, because "but it's hardwired!" is exactly the belief that sends a good doorbell to the landfill.
Family C — it never really worked right: won't power on wired, nags "low power," or the inside chime won't ring (a wiring problem)
This family shows up at installation, not months later. You wired it to the existing bell wires, and it either won't power up, shows a persistent low-power warning in the app, keeps rebooting, or works but won't ring your indoor chime. Nothing is broken — the old wiring and the new computer simply don't match yet.
- Low-power warnings / reboots on a freshly wired doorbell = an under-spec transformer. Wired video doorbells generally want 16–24 volts AC, and Ring is explicit that a transformer at the bottom of that range is the minimum and will likely cause low-power warnings, slow charging, and reboots during demanding activity (per Ring's insufficient-power troubleshooting). - Works, but the indoor chime won't ring, or it "steals" power = a chime-type mismatch. Modern doorbells care whether your indoor chime is mechanical (an old-fashioned two-note "ding-dong") or digital (an electronic tune). A digital chime typically needs a small bypass or diode installed and the chime type set correctly in the app, or the doorbell won't play through and can misbehave — and some kits require the app be set to "no chime" when you bypass it entirely (per Ring's Pro Power Kit / bypass instructions and the diode installation guide). Setting the wrong chime type in the app is a two-tap fix that people never try because it doesn't look like the problem.
The crux nobody explains: "hardwired" doesn't mean what you think
This single misunderstanding accounts for more thrown-away doorbells than any actual hardware failure, so read it slowly. The popular battery video doorbells that you can hardwire do not run on the wires — they run on the internal battery, and the wires only trickle it back up. "Hardwiring" a battery doorbell doesn't turn it into a wired device. It turns your old bell wiring into a slow charger for a battery that is still doing all the actual work.
Now stack the two starvations and watch the "defect" appear out of thin air. A busy street means the doorbell records constantly, draining hard. Winter means the battery has stopped accepting charge below freezing. And the "charger" doing the trickling is a decades-old transformer that was never generous to begin with. The trickle-in loses the race to the draw-out, the battery slowly empties, and a doorbell that is wired to power goes completely dark — while its owner swears it's defective because "it's plugged in!" It was never plugged in the way you think. The fix isn't a new doorbell; it's making the trickle win: a proper transformer, a plug-in adapter, or — tonight, in a cold snap — just pulling the battery to charge it inside.
The "fault that isn't a fault"
Two of the loudest "it's broken!" panics in this category are the doorbell working exactly as designed — and knowing that saves most of the money on this page.
The first is the winter battery dip. A battery percentage that slides in a cold snap and a doorbell that briefly drops offline near freezing are not a failing unit — they're the documented, deliberate behavior of a lithium battery and its protection circuit in the cold. It recovers on its own when it warms and recharges. The second is the indoor chime that "won't ring" after a wired install. That's almost always the chime-type setting in the app, or a missing bypass/diode for a digital chime — the doorbell is fine, it just hasn't been told what kind of chime it's talking to. Both of these send perfectly good doorbells back to the store as "defective" every single week.
The cruel twists — where the panic move costs you
Every one of these is a spot where the obvious reaction spends real money, when the actual fix was cheap or free:
- Keeps dropping offline → "the camera's defective, return it" → the Wi-Fi is simply too weak at the door, behind an exterior wall. Move to 2.4 GHz, move the router, or add an extender — free to cheap.
- "Wired" doorbell keeps dying → "it's faulty, it won't even hold a charge while plugged in" → it runs on its battery and the old transformer only trickles; the trickle lost the race. A proper transformer or plug-in adapter, not a new doorbell.
- Dies every January → "these things only last a year, buy a better one" → the battery stops charging below freezing by design while the busy street keeps it recording. Charge the pack indoors; keep a spare. Nothing is wrong.
- Won't power on / nags low power the day you install it → "dead on arrival, exchange it" → the forty-year-old chime transformer is under-spec for a computer. Upgrade the transformer — the doorbell is fine.
- Indoor chime won't ring → "the doorbell's broken" → the app's chime type is wrong, or a digital chime needs its bypass/diode. A two-tap setting or a small included part.
Read the symptom — it names the cause
Match what you've got. Watch the last column: for every common row, a new doorbell is the wrong answer.

When it really is dead (and the one honest reason to replace it)
Honesty matters, because some doorbells genuinely are finished — and you should know the difference so you neither fight a dead unit nor bin a good one. Suspect the doorbell itself only when, after you've confirmed strong signal at the door and adequate power:
- There's visible physical or water damage — a cracked faceplate that let moisture into the electronics, a unit that took a hard fall, corrosion on the board. Weather intrusion past a broken seal is a real killer, and it's the honest "yes."
- The battery won't hold any usable charge even after charging fully indoors, at room temperature, over a full cycle — after years of use, a pack can simply be worn out. On many models that's a replaceable battery, not a replaceable doorbell — check whether yours takes a fresh pack before you replace the whole thing.
And there's exactly one situation where buying a new doorbell is the honest call, and it isn't about the hardware failing: you've outgrown the platform.
