Why your video doorbell keeps going offline or won't stay charged — and why it's power and signal, not a dead camera

It worked fine in October. Now it's the second week of January, it drops offline every afternoon, and this morning it's simply dead — and a package walked off the step yesterday while it was down. So you got a lemon, and there's a newer, pricier model in your cart before your coffee's cold. Stop. The camera almost certainly didn't fail. A video doorbell isn't really a camera at all — it's a tiny always-on computer living on a starvation diet at the coldest, farthest, weakest corner of your house, and "it's broken" nearly always means one of two invisible things ran out: signal, or power.

Here's the reframe that reorganizes almost every "my video doorbell is defective" complaint, and the marketing goes out of its way not to say it: a video doorbell has to do a computer's job on a doorbell's budget. Behind that little lens is a Wi-Fi radio, a processor, an always-listening motion sensor, an LED ring, a speaker, and a microphone — all running continuously, powered by either a battery you can't see or a pair of thin bell wires that were run decades ago to make a chime go "ding-dong" twice a day. And it lives in the single worst spot in your house for both of the things it needs: it's the device farthest from your router, on the far side of an exterior wall, and it's bolted outside where January does what January does. So when it goes quiet, the honest first question is not "what broke inside the camera?" It's which utility starved — the signal, or the power? Nearly every time, that's the whole diagnosis, and neither answer is "buy another doorbell."

The one line to remember: a video doorbell almost never dies — it gets starved. Before you replace anything, ask which of two invisible supplies ran out: is the Wi-Fi too weak where the doorbell actually sits, or is it not getting enough power to stay charged? Prove one of those before you spend a dollar.

First, the honest safety line (it's short)

Almost nothing on this page is dangerous — that's rather the point. The low-voltage bell wires at the doorbell itself carry only the small AC voltage the doorbell runs on, and handling them, the battery, or the doorbell is safe. There are exactly two places to be careful:

The transformer is the one line-voltage part — and a ladder is a ladder. If your fix involves replacing the transformer (the small box wired into your home's electrical, often in the basement, a closet, or the garage), the input side of it is 120 volts. Kill the breaker before you touch it, or hire an electrician for that one connection — the doorbell wiring is safe, the transformer's line side is not. And since the doorbell hangs by your front door, if you're up on a step stool or ladder in winter, treat that with the same respect you would any ladder work. Everything else below — the app, the Wi-Fi, the battery, the chime settings — is genuinely harmless.

Read the drop — the pattern names which supply starved

Don't start swapping hardware. Start by matching how your doorbell misbehaves to one of three families. The pattern of the failure tells you which of the two invisible supplies is short, and that collapses a dozen possible causes down to one place to look.

Family A — it drops offline, comes back, drops again (a signal problem)

The classic tell: it's intermittent. It shows offline in the app, then it's fine, then a notification is late or a clip is missing, then it's offline again — and it's often worse when there's a lot going on (a live view plus a recording plus an upload all at once). This is Wi-Fi, not the camera. Your doorbell is the most signal-starved device you own: it's the farthest thing from the router, and there's usually an exterior wall — brick, stucco, or stone on a lot of older homes — sitting right between them.

Family B — it was fine, now it won't stay charged, dies, or reboots (a power problem, and often the cold)

The tell here is decline, not flicker: the battery drains faster than it used to, a "wired" doorbell slowly loses charge and then goes dark, or the unit reboots during a live view. And the giant clue almost nobody connects: it started with the first hard cold snap. If your doorbell "dies every January," it isn't wearing out on a yearly schedule — it's running into physics.

Family C — it never really worked right: won't power on wired, nags "low power," or the inside chime won't ring (a wiring problem)

This family shows up at installation, not months later. You wired it to the existing bell wires, and it either won't power up, shows a persistent low-power warning in the app, keeps rebooting, or works but won't ring your indoor chime. Nothing is broken — the old wiring and the new computer simply don't match yet.

The crux nobody explains: "hardwired" doesn't mean what you think

This single misunderstanding accounts for more thrown-away doorbells than any actual hardware failure, so read it slowly. The popular battery video doorbells that you can hardwire do not run on the wires — they run on the internal battery, and the wires only trickle it back up. "Hardwiring" a battery doorbell doesn't turn it into a wired device. It turns your old bell wiring into a slow charger for a battery that is still doing all the actual work.

Now stack the two starvations and watch the "defect" appear out of thin air. A busy street means the doorbell records constantly, draining hard. Winter means the battery has stopped accepting charge below freezing. And the "charger" doing the trickling is a decades-old transformer that was never generous to begin with. The trickle-in loses the race to the draw-out, the battery slowly empties, and a doorbell that is wired to power goes completely dark — while its owner swears it's defective because "it's plugged in!" It was never plugged in the way you think. The fix isn't a new doorbell; it's making the trickle win: a proper transformer, a plug-in adapter, or — tonight, in a cold snap — just pulling the battery to charge it inside.

Why the old transformer was never the villain, and never the fix on its own: a mechanical chime draws power for a fraction of a second, twice a day. A video doorbell draws power continuously, forever. The little transformer in your basement — often rated around 10 VA — was correctly sized for the chime and did that job faithfully for forty years. It isn't broken. It's simply under-spec for a job it was never asked to do: feeding a small computer around the clock. That's why "I wired the new one exactly like the old one and it won't stay powered" is so common — you connected a computer to a doorbell's power budget. (VA — volt-amps — is the load rating that actually matters here, not just the voltage number; a low-VA transformer at the right voltage still can't keep up.)

The "fault that isn't a fault"

Two of the loudest "it's broken!" panics in this category are the doorbell working exactly as designed — and knowing that saves most of the money on this page.

The first is the winter battery dip. A battery percentage that slides in a cold snap and a doorbell that briefly drops offline near freezing are not a failing unit — they're the documented, deliberate behavior of a lithium battery and its protection circuit in the cold. It recovers on its own when it warms and recharges. The second is the indoor chime that "won't ring" after a wired install. That's almost always the chime-type setting in the app, or a missing bypass/diode for a digital chime — the doorbell is fine, it just hasn't been told what kind of chime it's talking to. Both of these send perfectly good doorbells back to the store as "defective" every single week.

When it really is dead (and the one honest reason to replace it)

Honesty matters, because some doorbells genuinely are finished — and you should know the difference so you neither fight a dead unit nor bin a good one. Suspect the doorbell itself only when, after you've confirmed strong signal at the door and adequate power:

And there's exactly one situation where buying a new doorbell is the honest call, and it isn't about the hardware failing: you've outgrown the platform. If the real problem is an ongoing subscription you don't want to keep paying, or you need features (a head-to-toe view of the step, local storage, a wired-for-continuous-power model) your current unit can't do, that's a genuine upgrade decision — not a repair. The habit that prevents next January's "dead doorbell": before winter, do three ten-minute things. (1) Check the doorbell's signal number in the app now, while it's easy — if it's worse than about -65 dBm, add an extender toward the door before the cold makes a marginal signal fail. (2) If it's a battery model, buy a second battery so you can swap-and-charge without a gap, and plan to charge indoors on the coldest weeks. (3) If it's wired and has ever nagged about low power, confirm your transformer actually meets the doorbell's spec — a right-sized transformer is a few dollars and ends the whole problem. None of that is a new doorbell.
