A sump pump's job is to move water fast enough that your pit never overflows. The key spec is GPH (gallons per hour) at your actual discharge head — not the "maximum" GPH on the box, which is measured at zero feet of head. This guide covers the real capacity math and the decisions that matter.

Why this page exists

Sump pump spec sheets list GPH at zero head — an idealized number that doesn't reflect performance in your basement. The GPH drops significantly as the discharge height increases. A pump listed at 4,440 GPH might deliver 3,200 GPH through a 10-foot discharge run.

Knowing the actual GPH at your head pressure, and comparing that to your pit's inflow rate during a heavy storm, is the actual sizing problem. This page teaches you to do that math with the pump curve data that manufacturers publish.
