Sump Pumps

Sump pumps — submersible vs pedestal, GPH capacity, float switch, battery backup.

Submersible sump pump in concrete pit with discharge pipe, product photography

A sump pump's job is to move water fast enough that your pit never overflows. The key spec is GPH (gallons per hour) at your actual discharge head — not the "maximum" GPH on the box, which is measured at zero feet of head. This guide covers the real capacity math and the decisions that matter.

Troubleshooting Won't turn on, hums, or won't pump? It's the float, impeller, and discharge — not a dead motor Silent, humming, or running while the water still rises — almost never a burned-out motor. Read the safety line first (water + electricity), then sort it: power, a stuck float, a jammed impeller, or a blocked discharge. Three of the four are free to fix. Troubleshooting Runs constantly? It's usually the check valve — not a dying pump A pump that cycles in dry weather is pumping the same water twice because a check valve isn't sealing — and the short-cycling is what burns out the motor people rush to replace. Use the weather to diagnose it. Buying guide How to choose a sump pump: capacity, switch, and backup Submersible vs pedestal tradeoffs, how to calculate real GPH capacity at your discharge head, float switch types compared, and what a battery backup system actually delivers.

Why this page exists

Sump pump spec sheets list GPH at zero head — an idealized number that doesn't reflect performance in your basement. The GPH drops significantly as the discharge height increases. A pump listed at 4,440 GPH might deliver 3,200 GPH through a 10-foot discharge run.

Knowing the actual GPH at your head pressure, and comparing that to your pit's inflow rate during a heavy storm, is the actual sizing problem. This page teaches you to do that math with the pump curve data that manufacturers publish.
