Submersible vs pedestal differences, GPH-at-head math, float switch types, and battery backup system specs. Honest buying content.
Why this page exists
Sump pump spec sheets list GPH at zero head — an idealized number that doesn't reflect performance in your basement. The GPH drops significantly as the discharge height increases. A pump listed at 4,440 GPH might deliver 3,200 GPH through a 10-foot discharge run.
Knowing the actual GPH at your head pressure, and comparing that to your pit's inflow rate during a heavy storm, is the actual sizing problem. This page teaches you to do that math with the pump curve data that manufacturers publish.

Submersible Sump Pump
Motor sits in the pit, sealed and cooled by the water it pumps. Quieter than pedestal, handles debris-laden water better. Dominant choice for residential pits. Motor lifespan typically 10–15 years.

Battery Backup Sump Pump
DC pump running off a 12V battery activates when the primary AC pump fails or power goes out. Battery capacity (amp-hours) determines how long backup runs. Sealed AGM batteries are maintenance-free.

Sump Pump 1/2 HP
Standard residential capacity — typically 3,000–5,000 GPH at 10-foot head depending on model. Appropriate for most single-family homes with moderate groundwater infiltration. 3/4 or 1 HP for high-inflow situations.

Pedestal Sump Pump
Motor mounted above the pit on a column; only the impeller is submerged. Easier to service without pit entry; louder than submersible. Better choice for narrow (under 15") diameter pits where a submersible won't fit.

Sump Pump with Float Switch
Vertical float or tethered ball float triggers pump activation at a set water level. Vertical floats are more reliable in narrow pits; tethered floats can snag on pit walls. Electronic pressure switches are float-free alternatives.
