Why your gas string trimmer won't start, bogs, or dies — and why it's stale fuel, the carburetor, and spark, not a dead engine

First warm Saturday of the year. You drag the trimmer out of the shed, prime it, and yank the cord ten times, twenty, and get nothing but a cough. So you decide the engine's shot, and there's a new trimmer in your cart before lunch. Hold on. A two-stroke trimmer engine is one of the simplest, most durable machines you own — it very rarely just dies. It gets starved, and nine times out of ten the thing starving it is the gas you left in it over the winter, not the engine.

Here is the reframe that reorganizes every gas-trimmer no-start complaint, and almost no one leads with it: a two-stroke engine needs exactly three things to run, and a "dead" trimmer is almost always just one of them interrupted. It needs fuel (the right gas, mixed with the right oil, arriving clean at the carburetor), spark (a good plug firing at the right moment), and air (drawn in through the filter and pushed out through the muffler). That's it. The engine itself — the piston, the crank, the cylinder — is a lump of aluminum and steel that will outlast three carburetors. So when it won't start, the honest first move is not to diagnose the engine. It's to ask which of the three got interrupted — and to start with fuel, because fuel is where the trouble lives the overwhelming majority of the time.

And there's a practitioner secret behind that — the thing a small-engine shop knows and a "13 reasons your trimmer won't start" listicle buries at number nine: the single most common repair a shop makes in spring is cleaning a carburetor gummed shut by ethanol gasoline that sat all winter. Modern pump gas is mostly E10 — up to 10% ethanol — and ethanol is hygroscopic: it pulls water out of the air and into your fuel. Left sitting, that fuel breaks down, and the gasoline forms varnish and gummy deposits that clog the pinhole-sized passages inside the carburetor, so fuel can't reach the cylinder and the engine won't fire (per repair guidance from AMSOIL and small-engine parts sellers such as Blue Star Parts). E10 can start going bad in as little as 30 days, and in humid conditions the water can actually separate out of the fuel — "phase separation" — in about that same window (Mills Equipment; small-engine fuel guidance). So the trimmer that "died over the winter" didn't die. It was poisoned by its own tank, and the fix is a fraction of the price of a new machine.

The one line to remember: the engine is the last thing to suspect, not the first. Fuel, spark, air — in that order — and it's almost always the fuel you left in it. Prove the three before you replace the trimmer.

Do this first: the fuel is guilty until proven innocent

Before you touch a spark plug or a single screw, deal with the fuel — because if the fuel in the tank is old, nothing downstream matters and everything you do next is wasted motion. If that trimmer has been sitting for more than a month or two, the gas in it is the prime suspect, full stop.

  1. Dump the old fuel. Pour the old mix out of the tank into an approved container (not down a drain, not on the ground). If it smells sour or like varnish, looks dark or cloudy, or has visibly separated into layers, that's your answer — and you found it in two minutes.
  2. Refill with fresh, correctly mixed fuel. A two-stroke trimmer runs on gasoline premixed with two-stroke oil — never straight gas (more on why that's dangerous below). Mix a fresh batch at the ratio your engine calls for and try again. A surprising number of "dead" trimmers start on the third pull once the poison is gone.
  3. If it still won't fire, suspect the carburetor. If the fuel's fresh and it still won't catch, the old fuel most likely already gummed the carb before you drained it. A shot of carburetor cleaner through the passages sometimes frees it; a truly gummed carb often needs a rebuild kit (new diaphragm and gaskets) or, on these small engines, a whole replacement carburetor — which is often astonishingly cheap.
  4. Check the soft fuel parts while you're in there. The rubber primer bulb and the fuel lines crack and harden with age and ethanol exposure; a split line or a bulb that won't fill lets air in so fuel can't be drawn up. These are a few-dollar kit, and they're the second-most-common fuel-side fault after the carburetor.
The two-stroke rule that saves the engine: never run it on straight gas to "just test it." This is the one mistake that turns a fixable trimmer into a genuinely dead one. A two-stroke engine has no oil sump — its only lubrication is the oil mixed into the fuel. Run it on straight gasoline, or on a mix that's way too lean on oil, and the piston runs dry, overheats, and scores or seizes against the cylinder. That is the real, permanent engine death people fear — and it's almost always self-inflicted in the panic to get it running. If you're not sure a container is mixed, don't pour it in. Mix fresh, at the correct ratio, every time.

The three families of "it won't run"

Once the fuel is known-fresh, sort your symptom into one of three families. Each points at a different one of the three needs — and none of them is "buy a new trimmer."

Family A — won't fire at all (no pop, no cough)

The engine cranks when you pull but never catches. Something in the chain is fully broken. Work fuel, then spark:

Family B — fires then dies, or won't idle

It catches, runs for a second or two, then quits — or it will only run with the choke on, or dies the moment you touch the throttle. This is partial fuel starvation, and it's classic gummed-carburetor behavior:

Family C — runs, but bogs, has no power, or won't rev out

It starts and idles fine, but under throttle it bogs, sputters, blows smoke, or simply won't reach full speed. Now suspect air — in and out — and the oil mix:

The "fault that isn't a fault": a flooded engine

Here's the one that fools almost everyone into thinking the engine's finished. You choked it, pulled the cord a dozen times, and now it reeks of gasoline, the plug is wet, and it won't even cough. It feels dead. It isn't — it's flooded. A flooded engine is the opposite of a fuel-starvation problem: it has too much raw fuel in the cylinder, drowning the spark, and it happens exactly because you left the choke closed and kept yanking (or over-primed). Nothing is broken. The fix is to clear it, not replace it: open the choke fully, hold the throttle wide open, and pull the cord several times to draw air through and clear the excess; or pull the wet plug, let it and the cylinder air out for a few minutes, dry or swap the plug, and try again with the choke off. People throw away perfectly good trimmers over a flood they caused thirty seconds earlier.

When it really is done

Honesty matters, because a few trimmers are finished, and you should know the difference so you neither fight a dead one nor bin a good one. Suspect a genuinely dead machine when, after confirming fresh fuel, a good plug, a clean carb, and clear air in and out:

Even then, get there by elimination, not assumption — because the trimmer that "died over the winter" is, the overwhelming majority of the time, a carburetor full of last year's gas asking to be cleaned. The habit that prevents next spring's no-start: at the end of the season, either run the tank dry, or fill with fresh mix dosed with a fuel stabilizer — and consider buying ethanol-free gas for the mix, which stores far longer (often six months or more versus E10's roughly 30–90 days) because it isn't pulling water out of the air. Stabilizer slows the breakdown but can't reverse phase separation once it's happened, so the real move is: don't leave E10 sitting in it over the winter.
