Here is the thing almost nobody tells you when you start sewing: a sewing machine does not "make" a stitch — it performs a piece of geometry, and the needle is the moving part that has to be perfect for the trick to work. The trick goes like this. The needle punches down through the fabric carrying the top thread, and just as it starts back up, the thread bunches into a tiny loop on the back of the needle. Nobody changes the needle — that's the whole problem
The needle is the part people never think about. New sewists almost universally do this without knowing it: they grip the fabric and push it through or pull it along to help the machine. Don't. The machine has feed dogs — the little grippy teeth under the presser foot — whose entire job is to move the fabric the right amount for each stitch. When it really is the machine (the honest "yes")
Every common cause above answers "no — change the needle or your technique." There is one honest exception.
