Why this page exists
Model railroad content splits badly: manufacturer catalogs want you to buy new, and forum threads assume you already know what NMRA DCC means. Neither explains why a Blue Box Athearn runs differently than a Genesis Athearn, or whether the locomotive you found at an estate sale has a decoder socket.
HO scale equipment spans decades of quality and standards. A 1960s Tyco pancake-motor locomotive and a 2020s Athearn Genesis with factory ESU decoder are both "HO scale" — but they are not the same product category. This page explains the differences that matter for buying, running, and collecting.

Athearn HO locomotive
Blue Box (budget), Roundhouse, and Genesis tiers. Genesis models typically include factory DCC-ready or DCC-installed decoders. Wide road-name selection across multiple eras.
Bachmann HO train set
Spectrum and Plus lines span budget to collector grades. Spectrum equipment often includes five-pole motors and better detailing. Good entry point for starter layouts.
Vintage Lionel HO trains
Lionel's 1957–1966 HO era is distinct from their classic O-gauge line. Postwar HO equipment is collectible; condition of motor brushes and wheel flanges matters for runners.
Walthers HO freight cars
Cornerstone, Trainline, and Proto lines. Proto 2000 and Proto HO series are particularly well-regarded for mechanical quality and prototype accuracy.
MTH HO scale locomotive
MTH's HO line features their DCS (Digital Command System) alongside DCC compatibility. Sound-equipped models include synchronized chuff and bell. Secondary market following MTH's 2022 closure.
