Here is the sentence that reorganizes the whole problem, and almost no troubleshooting page leads with it: a dehumidifier is not a machine that eats moisture. It's a refrigerator running with its door open. A fan pulls room air across a coil that's kept colder than the air, water beads out onto that cold metal exactly the way a cold glass of iced tea sweats on a summer porch, the drops run down into a bucket, and the now-drier air passes a warm coil and blows back into the room a few degrees warmer than it came in.
Once you see that, "my dehumidifier died" stops being one mysterious failure and becomes a question of which of four simple things stopped. For it to pull water, all four have to work: the coil has to get cold, air has to flow across it, the water has to be able to reach the bucket, and the control has to decide to run. Three of those four are free to fix, and the fourth is often not broken at all. The compressor and the sealed refrigerant loop — the guts that a new unit's price is really paying for — almost never fail on their own. A new dehumidifier is the same four things, and it'll ice up in the same cold corner and get satisfied by the same dry setting.
So the honest answer to "should I buy a new one?" is, for nearly every symptom, no. With one important exception you should check first.
Before anything else: is your dehumidifier on a fire-recall list?
That is not scare-copy; it's the single most valuable thing this page can tell you, and it happens to be the one situation where replacing the unit is correct — except you shouldn't be paying for the replacement out of pocket. Everything from here down assumes you've checked and your unit isn't recalled.
The other safety rule: never run a dehumidifier on a thin extension cord
A dehumidifier runs a compressor for hours at a stretch and pulls real, continuous current. Feed that through a skinny household extension cord — the flat brown lamp-cord kind, or a long garden cord — and the cord can overheat under the load. Manufacturers and fire-safety guidance are unanimous on this: plug a dehumidifier straight into a wall outlet. If it truly can't reach one, use a short, heavy-gauge appliance-rated cord, never a light one, and never a daisy-chain of them. This is a genuine fire risk and it's completely avoidable.
The four-way sort: turn it on and watch what it does
Pick the row that matches your unit. Each points at one of the four things that must work.
1. It won't turn on at all → the control, the float, or the power
Before you conclude the machine is dead, rule out the two ways a perfectly good dehumidifier refuses to run:
- It's satisfied — the fault that isn't a fault. A dehumidifier has a humidistat: you set a target humidity, and once the room is drier than your setting, it correctly shuts off and waits. If you set it to 50% and the room is already at 45%, it will sit there doing nothing and look broken. Turn the dial down to its lowest number, or to "continuous," and see if it kicks on. If it does, it was never broken — it was finished.
- It thinks the bucket is full. Every unit has a float or sensor that stops it when the reservoir fills, so it doesn't overflow. If the float is stuck up, gunked with the slimy biofilm that grows in the tank, or the bucket simply isn't seated all the way home, the machine believes it's full and won't run. Pull the bucket, rinse it and the float, wipe the sensor contacts, and reseat it firmly. Free.
- Power. Basements and garages are usually on GFCI outlets, which trip easily in damp conditions — reset it. Confirm the outlet is live with something else. And if it's on an extension cord (see above), that's both a hazard and a common no-power cause.
2. It runs but collects little or no water → the coil isn't getting cold, or air isn't reaching it
This is the big one, and it's almost always about airflow, not the compressor.
- A clogged filter or a caked coil. That washable filter behind the grille loads up with basement dust, and the coil fins behind it fur over with grime. Choke the airflow and two things happen at once: the unit can't move enough air past the coil to condense much water, and the starved coil gets so cold it frosts over — which blocks the airflow even more. Pull the filter, wash it and let it dry; with the unit unplugged, gently vacuum or brush the coil fins clean. This one free step fixes a huge share of "runs all day, bucket's empty" units.
- A frozen coil. If the coil is iced up, the unit will run and collect nothing until it thaws. At normal room temperature, ice usually means restricted airflow (that dirty filter/coil again) or, less often, low refrigerant.
- The room is simply too wet to win. A dehumidifier can't out-run an active water source. If there's a foundation leak, a wet wall, a sump that's cycling, or groundwater pushing in, the machine will run forever and the room stays damp — because it's fighting a hose, not just humid air. That's not a broken dehumidifier; it's an outmatched one. Fix the water source first. Put a cheap hygrometer in the room so you know the real number: the EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30–50%, to hold off mold — if you're below that, the unit is winning even if the space still feels cool.
- It "collects less than it used to." Often it's not collecting less — the rating was always optimistic. The headline pints-per-day number is measured under warm, soaking test conditions, not your cool basement; see the pint rating is measured in a sauna.
3. It leaks water on the floor → drainage, not a crack
A puddle looks like a cracked tank and a dead machine. It's almost always a drainage setup problem, and almost always self-inflicted:
- You hooked up the continuous-drain hose but left the tank's drain plug in, or the hose runs uphill. A gravity drain only works downhill — the hose has to fall continuously to a lower drain the whole way, with no belly or loop where water pools. If your drain is higher than the unit, gravity can't do it; you need a model with a built-in condensate pump, or an add-on pump.
- The hose is kinked, or clogged with the slimy biofilm that grows in the constantly-wet drain path. Flush it out.
- The bucket isn't seated, so condensate misses it and runs down inside the cabinet and out onto the floor.
- A built-in condensate pump has failed, so the water it's supposed to push uphill backs up and overflows. The pump is a serviceable, replaceable part — far cheaper than the dehumidifier.
4. It runs, but the air blowing out is warm / it keeps cycling on and off → mostly normal
Two "faults" that usually aren't:
- Warm air out is normal. Remember the fridge-with-its-door-open picture: the unit dumps the heat it pulls off the cold coil back into the room, plus the compressor's own heat, so it gently warms the space as it dries it. A dehumidifier that makes a small room a bit warmer is working exactly as designed.
- Cycling on and off is normal. Once the room hits your humidity setting, it stops; when the room drifts damp again, it restarts. That's the humidistat doing its job. The only cycling to worry about is very rapid short-cycling — on and off every few seconds — which can point to an overheating or failing compressor (and is one more reason to have checked the recall list first).

When it really is time for a new dehumidifier
A dirty coil, a stuck float, a hose run uphill, and a control set too high explain the overwhelming majority of "dead" dehumidifiers, and every one of those is free or cheap. Treat it as a genuine end-of-life case only when:
- It's on a recall list. This is the real "stop using it" — but the answer is a manufacturer refund, so check CPSC.gov before you spend a dollar of your own.
- It runs warm continuously, never frosts anywhere, and never collects a single drop — with a clean filter, a clean coil, and a warm, humid room. That points to a refrigerant leak or a dead sealed system. On a portable dehumidifier, a sealed-system repair almost always costs more than a new unit, so this is an honest replace.
- The compressor won't start — it buzzes or hums, then clicks off on its thermal overload, again and again. A seized compressor on a portable isn't worth repairing.
- The reservoir or the cabinet is cracked or rusted through and leaking internally past any fix.
- It was never the right size for the space. A small unit running 24/7 and losing to a big wet basement isn't broken — it's outmatched. For everything short of that, the honest answer is the cheap one. Your dehumidifier is a fridge with its door open: keep the air path clean, let ice thaw instead of chipping it, run the drain downhill, and set the humidistat low enough to call for water — and most "dead" units have years of dry basements left in them.
