A 12V compressor fridge is one of the biggest power draws in any van, RV, or overlanding build. Understanding average daily consumption — not just peak draw — is what correctly sizes your battery bank and solar array around it.

Guides

12V fridge guides covering compressor types, dual-zone designs, power draw for off-grid sizing, and build quality differences at different price points.

Troubleshooting Why your 12V fridge keeps shutting off, drains your battery, or won't get cold It almost never has a dead compressor — it's obeying the voltage cutoff and the heat cutoff over a wire that lies to it. The way it quits tells you which, and the fix is usually a setting or a fatter cable, not a new fridge. Buying guide How to choose a 12V fridge: compressor, capacity, and power draw Compressor type and efficiency, liters vs quarts, single vs dual-zone, actual daily Wh consumption for system sizing, and what separates premium from budget builds.

Why this page exists

12V fridge listings quote amp draw at maximum compressor speed, which the unit only reaches at startup or in extreme ambient heat. Actual daily consumption in typical conditions is significantly lower — but the range between efficient and inefficient units is wide. An efficient 40L fridge in moderate conditions might use 20–35 Ah/day. A poorly insulated unit of the same size could use 50–70 Ah/day.

The compressor type, insulation thickness, and lid-seal quality determine where in that range your fridge lands. This page covers how to evaluate these factors when comparing listings, and how to estimate the battery capacity and solar you'll need to run the fridge you choose.

Refine by capacity (30L, 40L, 50L) and check for variable-speed compressor specs — units with variable-speed BLDC compressors (like Secop or Danfoss) are generally more efficient than single-speed units. Thermoelectric units are cheaper but can only cool ~15–20°C below ambient — insufficient for freezing or warm climates. Confirm you're getting a compressor unit if refrigeration performance matters. Look for a unit that specifies the compressor brand (Secop/Danfoss, ASP/Bristol) rather than just generic "high-efficiency compressor." Compressor brand is a proxy for build quality. A true 12V freezer draws more power than a fridge-only unit — factor in at least 40–60 Ah/day additional battery capacity if you plan to freeze food. Dual-zone units let you separate fridge and freezer sections. Popular in overlanding rigs. Adds complexity and power draw but eliminates carrying two separate units. Check whether the zones have separate compressors or share one. View on eBay →
