Why this page exists
Inverter listings are full of peak-watt numbers that bear little relation to what the unit can sustain for more than a few seconds. A 3,000W inverter that can only hold 1,500W continuous will trip its thermal protection when you try to run a microwave. Continuous watts is the number that matters; surge watts is what it can handle briefly at startup.
The waveform question — pure sine vs modified sine — is similarly skimped on in most listings. Modified sine wave is fine for resistive loads like heaters and incandescent lights, but it causes problems with motor-driven appliances, medical devices, audio equipment, and many battery chargers. This page explains when it matters and when it doesn't.
