Why this page exists
Wheat penny content online skews toward click-bait ("worth $10,000!") or dry mintage tables with no context for why certain dates are scarce. Neither helps you recognize a key date in a roll or a lot.
The 1909-S VDB is the most famous and most counterfeited wheat cent. The 1955 doubled die is the most dramatic die error in US coinage. Knowing what to look for in hand — not on a graded slab — is the practical skill this page covers.

1909-S VDB penny
The key date of the series. 484,000 minted at San Francisco. Verify "VDB" initials at reverse base and "S" mint mark on obverse. Insist on PCGS or NGC graded examples for significant purchases.
1914-D wheat cent
One of the classic semi-keys. The 1914-D is frequently counterfeited by adding a "D" mint mark to the common 1914-P. Third-party grading strongly recommended.
1955 doubled die penny
The most dramatic doubled die in US coinage — the doubling is visible to the naked eye. Genuine examples show dramatic doubling on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date.
