Spearfishing content online tends to polarize: either beginner tutorials that treat every reader as a tropics-and-snorkel diver, or advanced freediving forums where beginners get lost in carbon fiber blade debates. Neither tells you how water temperature, target species, and dive depth should drive your first gear purchase.

A 100 cm band speargun is not the right choice for hunting yellowtail in kelp — and a 130 cm pole spear is overkill for shallow reef fish in 3 meters of water. Matching gear to conditions is the actual skill; knowing the specs is how you buy the right thing used or new.
