Your space heater shuts off, won't start, or trips the breaker — it's the safety switches and your wiring, not a dead heater

A space heater is the simplest appliance in your house: a heating element, a fan, and two safety switches whose entire job is to cut the power before a fire starts. So when it "shuts off by itself," that is very often the heater working — and telling you something. Here's the uncomfortable part most troubleshooting pages skip: the fault usually isn't inside the heater at all. It's the outlet, the cord, or the circuit — which means a brand-new heater walks straight into the same danger. Read what yours is telling you before you buy one, and before you do the thing that starts the fire.

It's the first genuinely cold night of the year. You dig the space heater out of the closet, plug it in behind the dresser, and twenty minutes later it clicks off on its own. You try again; it runs a while, clicks off again. You decide it's worn out, and a new one is in your cart before you've had your coffee. Maybe, to get through tonight, you fold a washcloth under the base to stop it "cutting out," and you notice the plug on the extension cord feels warm.

Almost everything in that paragraph is backwards. The heater very likely isn't broken. The clicking-off is a safety switch doing exactly what it was built to do. The washcloth defeats it. The warm plug is the actual emergency. And the new heater you're about to buy will do the same thing — or worse — because the problem isn't the heater. Let's fix the real one.

The whole machine, in one paragraph

There is almost nothing to a space heater, and that's the key to reading it. Current flows through a heating element — a resistance coil, a PTC ceramic block, or a quartz/infrared tube — and it gets hot. On most units a small fan pushes that heat out through a grille. A thermostat (a dial or a digital setpoint) decides when to run and when to rest. And then there are the two parts that matter most for troubleshooting, because they exist for one reason — to keep this thing from burning your house down:

So when a space heater "acts broken," it is almost always one of five plain things: no power is reaching it, the tip-over switch tripped, the overheat cutoff tripped, the thermostat is satisfied, or the circuit/outlet/cord is failing outside the heater. Sort your symptom into the right bucket and the fix — usually free — becomes obvious.

Sort it into four buckets

1. It won't turn on at all — no light, no fan, nothing

A safety switch is tripping — and the overheat cutoff is the number-one cause. Unplug it, let it cool for fifteen minutes, then clear the reason it overheated:

Or — the happy version — the thermostat is simply satisfied. The room reached the temperature the dial is set to, so the heater rested. Turn the setting up and see if it kicks back on. That's not a fault; that's the thermostat working.

3. It trips the breaker (or the GFCI)

This is a circuit problem, not a heater problem — and it's the one that sits closest to a fire. A 1500-watt heater on a standard 120-volt outlet pulls about 12.5 amps (that's just arithmetic: 1500 watts ÷ 120 volts = 12.5 amps). A common household circuit is rated for 15 amps total. Share that circuit with a TV, a couple of lamps, a phone charger — or, worst of all, a second heater — and you're over the limit, so the breaker does its job and trips.

4. It runs, but something feels wrong — a smell, a noise, weak heat

The first time you run a heater each season, a hot, dusty smell is normal — that's dust burning off the element, and it clears in a few minutes in a ventilated room. But a burning-plastic or acrid electrical smell, or any smell that keeps coming back, is not the element — it's the cord, the plug, or the outlet overheating, and it means stop now (again, next section). Weak heat from a fan heater is usually the same clogged intake — clean it — or the unit is simply on a low/eco setting.

Before you fix anything: the five safety facts that matter more than the repair

This is the part of the page that can actually keep you safe, so it comes before the money. Space heaters and heating stoves cause a minority of home heating fires but the large majority of the deaths — roughly three out of four heating-fire deaths involve them, per the NFPA's Home Heating Fires report. The heaters mostly aren't defective. The trouble is that the safe way to run one is narrow, and the "fixes" people reach for are exactly the moves that turn a working heater into a fire.

1. The extension cord or power strip is the single most common way a space heater starts a fire. That ~12.5-amp continuous draw is more than light-duty extension cords and most power strips are built to carry. They heat up, the insulation softens, and they can ignite — often buried under a bed skirt or behind furniture where you won't see it start. Plug a space heater directly into a wall outlet. Every fire authority says this, and it is not optional.
2. A warm or discolored plug or outlet means stop. If the plug feels hot to the touch, or the outlet is browned or scorched, the connection is loose and arcing behind the faceplate — a fire path a new heater will not fix. Stop using that outlet and have it looked at; move the heater to a known-good one in the meantime.
3. Do not defeat the shutoff. There are articles online literally titled "how to bypass an electric heater's shutoff." Don't. The tip-over switch and the overheat cutoff are the two things standing between a bad night and a house fire. Propping the base, taping the switch, or bypassing the cutoff removes your protection at the exact moment it is trying to save you. If it keeps tripping, fix the cause — dust, clearance, a level surface — not the switch.
4. Three feet of clear space, a hard level surface, and never unattended. More than half of home heating-fire deaths come from heating equipment placed too close to things that can burn (NFPA). Keep three feet clear of bedding, curtains, upholstery, and laundry, and turn the heater off when you leave the room or go to sleep. The fatal pattern is a heater left running near something soft while everyone is asleep.
5. If it burns fuel, it makes carbon monoxide. Kerosene and propane "portable" heaters are a different animal from an electric one — they produce carbon monoxide and are for ventilated or outdoor use only, with a working CO alarm nearby. Never run a fuel-burning heater in a closed bedroom.

The two things that look like defects but aren't

It shutting off is often the safety system working. A heater that clicks off when it overheats or gets nudged is doing precisely what it was designed to do. Chase the cause — dust, clearance, a level floor — not the switch, and never the "off" itself.

A hot, dusty smell on the first cold night is normal. That's the season's dust burning off the element, and it's gone in minutes. A plastic or electrical smell, or one that recurs after the dust should be gone, is the wiring — and that one means unplug and stop, not "air it out and keep going."

When it really is time for a new one

Here's where a space heater is different from most things we tell you to repair instead of replace. The parts that matter can't be safely fixed at home — you never splice a heater cord, and you don't rebuild an overheat cutoff — and a decent heater is cheap. So the honest "replace it" bar is low, and it's about safety, not thrift. Replace the whole unit when:
