It's the first genuinely cold night of the year. You dig the space heater out of the closet, plug it in behind the dresser, and twenty minutes later it clicks off on its own. You try again; it runs a while, clicks off again. You decide it's worn out, and a new one is in your cart before you've had your coffee. Maybe, to get through tonight, you fold a washcloth under the base to stop it "cutting out," and you notice the plug on the extension cord feels warm.
Almost everything in that paragraph is backwards. The heater very likely isn't broken. The clicking-off is a safety switch doing exactly what it was built to do. The washcloth defeats it. The warm plug is the actual emergency. And the new heater you're about to buy will do the same thing — or worse — because the problem isn't the heater. Let's fix the real one.
The whole machine, in one paragraph
There is almost nothing to a space heater, and that's the key to reading it. Current flows through a heating element — a resistance coil, a PTC ceramic block, or a quartz/infrared tube — and it gets hot. On most units a small fan pushes that heat out through a grille. A thermostat (a dial or a digital setpoint) decides when to run and when to rest. And then there are the two parts that matter most for troubleshooting, because they exist for one reason — to keep this thing from burning your house down:
- A tip-over switch — a spring-loaded peg or plate on the base. The heater's own weight, sitting flat on a level surface, holds it pressed down. Tilt it, bump it, or stand it on a soft rug that lets the peg lift, and it cuts the power. That's the point.
- An overheat cutoff (thermal limit) — a heat-sensing switch inside, near the element. When the internal temperature climbs past safe — because the element is choked with dust, the intake is blocked, or the heater is shoved against a wall or a curtain — it trips and shuts the heater off. Also the point.
So when a space heater "acts broken," it is almost always one of five plain things: no power is reaching it, the tip-over switch tripped, the overheat cutoff tripped, the thermostat is satisfied, or the circuit/outlet/cord is failing outside the heater. Sort your symptom into the right bucket and the fix — usually free — becomes obvious.
Sort it into four buckets
1. It won't turn on at all — no light, no fan, nothing
Power isn't reaching the element. Work through these in order; every one is free:
- Is the outlet live? Plug a lamp into it. Dead outlet, dead heater — and it's not the heater's fault.
- Did a breaker or GFCI trip? Check the panel; check for a reset button on the outlet itself (bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor outlets are GFCI).
- Is the tip-over switch seated? Stand the heater fully upright on a hard, level floor. A carpet or a rug is uneven and soft enough to let the peg partly lift, and the heater reads that as "tipped" and stays dead.
- Is the cord or plug damaged? A cracked plug or a cut in the cord can break the connection — and it's also a reason to retire the unit, which we'll come back to.
2. It turns on, then shuts off after a few minutes
A safety switch is tripping — and the overheat cutoff is the number-one cause. Unplug it, let it cool for fifteen minutes, then clear the reason it overheated:
- Vacuum the dust out. A season in the closet packs dust into the intake grille and onto the element. That dust insulates the element and starves the airflow the heater needs to shed heat, so the internal temperature runs away and the cutoff trips. A few minutes with a vacuum and a soft brush on the intake and output grilles is the most common fix in this whole article.
- Give it three feet of clear space. Against a wall, under a shelf, or nosed into the curtains, the hot air can't escape — same overheat, same trip.
- Put it on a hard surface. Plush carpet blocks the underside intake on some models and unseats the tip-over peg.
Or — the happy version — the thermostat is simply satisfied. The room reached the temperature the dial is set to, so the heater rested. Turn the setting up and see if it kicks back on. That's not a fault; that's the thermostat working.
3. It trips the breaker (or the GFCI)
This is a circuit problem, not a heater problem — and it's the one that sits closest to a fire. A 1500-watt heater on a standard 120-volt outlet pulls about 12.5 amps (that's just arithmetic: 1500 watts ÷ 120 volts = 12.5 amps). A common household circuit is rated for 15 amps total. Share that circuit with a TV, a couple of lamps, a phone charger — or, worst of all, a second heater — and you're over the limit, so the breaker does its job and trips.
- Move the heater to a different room / its own circuit, and unplug other things on the same circuit.
- Never run it through an extension cord or a power strip (see the safety section — this is the big one).
- A GFCI that trips (in a bathroom, kitchen, or outdoors) can mean moisture or a genuine ground fault. Don't keep resetting a GFCI into a damp spot — move the heater to a dry outlet.
4. It runs, but something feels wrong — a smell, a noise, weak heat
The first time you run a heater each season, a hot, dusty smell is normal — that's dust burning off the element, and it clears in a few minutes in a ventilated room. But a burning-plastic or acrid electrical smell, or any smell that keeps coming back, is not the element — it's the cord, the plug, or the outlet overheating, and it means stop now (again, next section). Weak heat from a fan heater is usually the same clogged intake — clean it — or the unit is simply on a low/eco setting.
Before you fix anything: the five safety facts that matter more than the repair
This is the part of the page that can actually keep you safe, so it comes before the money. Space heaters and heating stoves cause a minority of home heating fires but the large majority of the deaths — roughly three out of four heating-fire deaths involve them, per the NFPA's Home Heating Fires report. The heaters mostly aren't defective. The trouble is that the safe way to run one is narrow, and the "fixes" people reach for are exactly the moves that turn a working heater into a fire.
The two things that look like defects but aren't
It shutting off is often the safety system working. A heater that clicks off when it overheats or gets nudged is doing precisely what it was designed to do. Chase the cause — dust, clearance, a level floor — not the switch, and never the "off" itself.
A hot, dusty smell on the first cold night is normal. That's the season's dust burning off the element, and it's gone in minutes. A plastic or electrical smell, or one that recurs after the dust should be gone, is the wiring — and that one means unplug and stop, not "air it out and keep going."

When it really is time for a new one
Here's where a space heater is different from most things we tell you to repair instead of replace. The parts that matter can't be safely fixed at home — you never splice a heater cord, and you don't rebuild an overheat cutoff — and a decent heater is cheap. So the honest "replace it" bar is low, and it's about safety, not thrift. Replace the whole unit when:
- The heater's own cord or plug is heat-damaged or scorched. Never extend, tape, or splice a heater cord — retire the heater.
- It's been dropped or cracked with the element exposed.
- It trips its overheat cutoff over and over even when clean, clear, and on a hard level surface. A heater whose safety switch you can't trust is the one to let go.

The short version
A space heater is an element, a fan, and two safety switches. When it shuts off, won't start, or trips the breaker, it's usually one of five plain causes — no power in, tip-over tripped, overheat tripped, thermostat satisfied, or the circuit/outlet/cord failing — and most of the fixes are free: sit it level on a hard floor, vacuum the dust, clear three feet of space, and give it its own circuit. Plug it straight into the wall, never a cord or strip; if the plug gets warm, stop; and never defeat the switch that's trying to protect you. And know the honest catch that no "buy a new one" instinct accounts for: when the fault is in your wiring, a new heater carries the same fire risk straight into the same outlet. Fix the cause, not the symptom.
