Infrared vs ceramic heaters — what actually differs

Shopping for a space heater, you'll be sold 'infrared' and 'ceramic' like they're different amounts of warmth. They're not — at the same watts they produce the same heat and cost the same to run. What differs is how that heat reaches you, and that genuinely changes which one is right for your situation.

First, the part the marketing obscures: a 1500-watt infrared heater and a 1500-watt ceramic heater put out the same amount of heat and cost the same to run, because watts in equals heat out (see the watt math). Neither is more "efficient." What's different is the delivery — how that identical heat gets from the device to you — and that's a real, useful difference.

The actual distinction: a ceramic heater warms the air (convection) — it heats a room evenly but gradually, and the warmth fades when it's off. An infrared heater warms objects and people directly (radiant heat, like standing in sunlight) — you feel it instantly and right where it's aimed, but it doesn't warm the air much, and the warmth stops when you step out of its line.

The short version

Infrared and ceramic heaters of the same wattage make the same heat for the same money — the difference is delivery. Ceramic warms the room's air (good for a whole small room); infrared warms you directly and instantly (good for spot-warming and drafty spaces). Pick by where you want the heat, not by which sounds more advanced. And the cheapest heat of all is still warming the person — see the watt math.
