PSI is the marketing number; flow rate does the cleaning

Pressure washers are sold on PSI, and buyers chase the biggest number. But the spec that actually determines how fast you clean is the one rarely on the front of the box: flow rate.

Pressure washers are marketed on one heroic number: PSI, the pressure they put out, splashed across the box and the adverts. Buyers naturally chase the biggest PSI they can get, assuming more pressure means more cleaning power. But PSI is only half the story, and arguably the less important half for many jobs. The spec that actually determines how quickly you get a surface clean is the one rarely featured on the front of the box: the flow rate, the volume of water delivered, usually measured in gallons or litres per minute.

What pressure and flow each do

Pressure (PSI) is the force of the water — how hard it hits, which helps blast stubborn grime loose. Flow rate is how much water is moving — the volume per minute, which does the work of actually rinsing the loosened dirt away and covering area. Cleaning is a combination of both: pressure breaks the dirt free, and flow carries it off and lets you cover ground. A high-pressure, low-flow washer can blast a small spot hard but cleans large areas slowly because it moves little water; a good flow rate is what lets you actually clean a driveway or a deck efficiently rather than inch by inch. For real-world cleaning speed, flow rate often matters as much as or more than peak pressure.

The reframe: do not buy on PSI alone. Look at the flow rate too, because the combination — sometimes thought of together as cleaning power — determines how effectively and quickly you clean, and flow is the half that does the rinsing and covers area. A washer with sky-high PSI but poor flow can be slower and more frustrating on big jobs than a balanced machine with solid flow. The big PSI number is the marketing hook; the flow rate, tucked in the specs, is what makes the cleaning go quickly. Judge the machine on both, and weight flow more than the marketing does.

Why PSI gets the spotlight

Because it is a single, big, impressive-sounding number that is easy to market and easy to compare — bigger PSI sounds obviously more powerful — while flow rate is a less intuitive, less hyped spec that does not sell as dramatically. So the marketing leans on PSI, buyers compare PSI, and the flow rate that actually governs cleaning speed gets overlooked, leading people to buy high-pressure machines that clean large areas slowly.
