Why this page exists

Most ladder content either repeats manufacturer marketing or focuses on brand comparisons without explaining what duty rating means or why a 6-foot step ladder doesn't let you safely reach 6 feet. Neither tells you that the safe standing height on a step ladder is two rungs below the top.

A Type I 6-foot aluminum step ladder and a Type IA 6-foot fiberglass step ladder are not the same tool — they have different weight capacities and different use cases near electrical hazards. This page explains the meaningful differences.
