Guides
Used machine inspection and boiler type comparisons — the technical knowledge the listing photos don't show you.
Why this page exists
Espresso machine content online divides between beginner guides that stop at brand names and enthusiast forums too deep in jargon to be useful. Neither tells you what to check when you're standing in front of a used Rancilio Silvia on Craigslist.
This page covers the mechanical inspection — what to look at, what to ask the seller, and what conditions make a used machine a good purchase versus an expensive project.
Espresso machines worth searching on eBay
Proven prosumer and commercial machines with established used markets and available parts. We earn a small commission on qualifying sales. Full disclosure.
Rancilio Silvia
Single-boiler prosumer workhorse. 58mm commercial portafilter. Produced since 1997 with minor revisions (v1–v6). Parts widely available. Inspect steam wand condition and group head gasket.
Breville Barista Pro
Integrated grinder (54mm portafilter), thermojet heating (3-second heat-up). Good all-in-one for home use. Check grinder burr condition — burrs wear and are costly to replace.
Gaggia Classic Pro
Single-boiler, 58mm portafilter, solenoid valve (pressure release on backflush). The Pro version (post-2019) corrected the OPV pressure issue of the earlier Classic. Highly modifiable.
Niche Zero grinder
Single-dose conical burr grinder (63mm conical). Near-zero retention. Popular upgrade path from blade or entry-level grinders. Used units hold value well — check burr condition and hopper.
La Marzocco Linea Mini
Dual boiler, saturated group head, commercial internals in a home form factor. Rotary pump version preferred for home use (quieter). Check PID display, steam wand, and service history.
