Clay Shooting

Choke, fit, and breaking more targets.

Choke, fit, and breaking more targets.

Sporting clays, skeet, trap — three disciplines that share a shotgun but reward different setups. The articles below cover the technical decisions that actually move scores: choke choice by station distance, gun fit math without a fitter, and what over-choking costs you. Real gear takes at the bottom — no sponsored picks, just what consistent shooters keep buying.

Technical Guides

Long-form decision guides for the questions that actually affect your score.

Chokes & pattern Choke selection by discipline: IC to Full, by station distance and target angle Improved cylinder versus modified versus full — what the constriction actually does to your pattern, and why over-choking at close-crossing stations costs more targets than under-choking does. Gun fit Gun fit: measuring length of pull and drop at comb, and when to call a fitter You break targets with your eye, not your hands. The LOP measurement most shooters get wrong, the drop-at-comb math, and what you can adjust yourself versus what actually needs a gunsmith.

Why this page exists

Most clay shooting content online is either beginner walk-throughs or manufacturer marketing. Neither answers the question a shooter who is already breaking 70% of targets is actually asking: what specific decision is costing me the other 30%?

The choke and gun fit guides here are built from the technical mechanics — constriction geometry, pattern density math, comb height physics — not from "what the pros use." The pros have custom guns and professional fitters. These guides are for the rest of us who shoot production guns and need to understand what to adjust and why.

Plain note about money. Some links in the reviews go to product pages on eBay with an affiliate tag. If you buy through one, the commission pays for the site. Your price doesn't change. The cheap option is usually fine; when the expensive option is worth it, this site will explain exactly why.

Gear actually worth buying

Smart eBay searches we'd start with ourselves. We earn a small commission on qualifying sales through these links; the price you pay is the same whether you use them or go direct to eBay. Full disclosure.
