Walk through air-rifle marketing and one number dominates: muzzle velocity, the headline figure quoted as the rifle's defining spec. Beginners reasonably assume bigger is better and buy accordingly. But velocity is one of the least useful numbers for deciding whether a rifle is good, because the thing you actually want — hitting your target reliably — depends on factors the velocity figure does not capture and can even work against.
Why raw velocity misleads
A high headline velocity is often achieved with very light projectiles and under ideal conditions, and chasing maximum speed can actually hurt accuracy and consistency — the qualities that decide whether you hit anything. What matters for hitting a target is how repeatably the rifle sends a pellet to the same place: consistency of the powerplant, how well the rifle suits a given pellet, and the steadiness of the whole package. A rifle with a lower, more consistent velocity that groups tightly will out-shoot a higher-velocity rifle that sprays.
The pellet point nobody markets
Air rifles are famously fussy about pellets: a given rifle shoots tight groups with some pellets and scatters with others, and finding the pellet your particular rifle likes often improves accuracy more than any spec on the box. This is unsellable — there is no big number for "responds well to careful pellet selection" — so it goes unmentioned, while velocity gets the spotlight it does not deserve.

Ignore the velocity arms race. Judge an air rifle by its consistency and its real-world accuracy, prioritise a rifle known to group well, and then spend time finding the pellet it prefers. Hitting the target is the entire point, and the headline number was never measuring that. Buy for grouping, not for the biggest figure on the marketing.
