Your first printer problem is never the printer

When the first prints fail, beginners blame the machine and start shopping for a better one. The fault is almost always in four free variables they haven't learned yet. Fix those before you spend a penny.

The first month of 3D printing is mostly failure, and the failure feels like the machine's fault. The print does not stick, or it turns into spaghetti, or it warps off the bed, and the obvious conclusion is that you bought a bad printer and need a better one. You almost certainly did not. The problems that wreck early prints live in a handful of free variables that have nothing to do with the hardware, and learning them is the actual hobby.

The four things that are actually wrong

Bed adhesion — whether the first layer grips — is the single biggest cause of early heartbreak, and it is about levelling, distance, and a clean surface, not the printer's quality. Then there is the first-layer setup itself, the nozzle-to-bed gap that makes or breaks everything above it. Then filament, which absorbs moisture and prints badly when damp regardless of machine. Then your slicer settings, the software choices that the machine simply obeys. A perfect printer with these four wrong prints garbage; a modest printer with them right prints beautifully.

Why this saves you money: the upgrade impulse sends beginners toward a new machine that has the exact same four variables, which they then get wrong again, and conclude that printer is bad too. The skill does not come in the box. Master levelling, first-layer height, dry filament, and sane slicer settings on the printer you own, and it will suddenly seem like a different, much better machine — for free.

Why blaming the printer is so tempting

Because the printer is the expensive, tangible, blameable object, and "I need to learn to level a bed" is far less satisfying than "I need a better printer." The hobby has a steep, invisible learning curve in the first weeks, and it is genuinely easy to mistake your inexperience for the machine's inadequacy.

The honest path

Assume every early failure is a process problem until proven otherwise. Learn the four variables in order, one at a time, changing one thing per print so you actually learn what each does. Give it a few weeks of patient iteration before you believe the hardware is the limit. Nine times out of ten, the printer was fine and you just became competent.
