Dive computer buying: the honest sub-$400 picks
Suunto Zoop vs Mares Smart vs Garmin Descent. The honest comparison on screen, battery, gas modes, and what's worth the premium.
The dive computer is the most important purchase a new diver makes. It's the difference between guessing your no-decompression limit and seeing it on a screen. It's the difference between watching your tables and watching your fish. And it's the one piece of gear where the cheap option still works perfectly.
Here's the honest tier.
Tier 1: under $300 (works fine forever)
Suunto Zoop Novo ($240)
The Honda Civic of dive computers. Reliable, basic, four-button operation, monochrome screen. Algorithm is Suunto RGBM (conservative). Works on air and nitrox up to 50%.
The screen is small but readable. The interface is mildly clunky but you'll learn it in 10 dives. Battery is user-replaceable (any dive shop or even a watchmaker can swap it for $20).
If you're going to dive 10-30 days per year for the next 10 years, this is the right purchase. It will outlast multiple owners.
Mares Smart ($330)
Slightly better screen, two-button operation, identical functional capability. The Mares RGBM algorithm runs slightly less conservative than Suunto for the same dive profile. Replaceable battery.
Better choice than the Zoop if you'll do nitrox diving regularly β interface for switching gases is faster.
Tier 2: $400-500 (real upgrade in usability)
Shearwater Peregrine ($430)
Color screen, large numbers, button operation. The interface is intuitive enough that many divers don't read the manual. Supports air, multi-gas nitrox, and trimix (overkill for recreational, but future-proof).
Battery is rechargeable via USB-C. Lasts about 30 hours of diving per charge.
This is the dive computer most divers should buy if they can afford it. The premium over the Zoop is real and you'll feel it on every dive.
Mares Genius ($499)
Touchscreen, full color, customizable display. Powerful but the touchscreen feel under gloves is mixed. Some divers love it, some hate it. Try before buying if possible.
Tier 3: $700+ (watch-format premium)
Garmin Descent Mk2 / Mk3 ($1,000-1,400)
A real Garmin smartwatch that's also a dive computer. GPS, heart rate, sleep tracking, surface fitness modes β and a fully featured dive computer. Looks like a watch all day.
The dive computer functionality is excellent. The compromises are minor (smaller screen than dedicated computers, gloves slightly awkward to operate).
Worth the premium only if you wear it daily on the surface. As a pure dive computer, the Peregrine matches it functionally at one-third the price.
Suunto Eon Steel / D5 ($600-900)
Premium Suunto with color screen, button or wireless transmitter integration. Industrial-strength design. Better than Peregrine on customization, similar on actual functionality. Worth it for advanced divers or those wanting wireless air integration.

What doesn't matter as much as marketing claims
- Air integration (wireless transmitter): Useful but not essential. Adds $250-400. Most divers do fine reading their SPG. Buy after you know you'll keep diving.
- Trimix capability: Pointless unless you're heading toward technical diving. The vast majority of recreational divers never use it.
- Conservatism settings: Most computers have "conservatism" or "P factor" adjustments. Default is fine for new divers. More conservative is fine too. Avoid making it less conservative without training.
- Screen size: Bigger is better, but not by enough to justify $300 of the premium difference. The Zoop screen is small but legible.
Battery: rechargeable vs replaceable
Honest tradeoff:
- Replaceable batteries (Zoop, Smart): Battery dies, you change it in 10 minutes. Battery lasts 1-2 years. No risk of forgetting to charge.
- Rechargeable (Peregrine, Garmin): No battery changes, but you have to remember to charge. Charging port is a potential failure point. Battery degrades over 5-7 years.
For weekend divers, replaceable batteries are slightly more reliable. For frequent divers, rechargeable is more convenient.
Used dive computers
Computers from 2018+ are essentially fine to buy used. Older than that, the algorithms are older and the screens are dimmer. Check battery age before purchase β that's the part most likely to need replacement soon.
A used Suunto Zoop or Vyper from 2020 sells for around $150 vs $240 new. Decent value if you find one in good condition.
