The reason brown tips are so frustrating is that several completely different problems all produce the same symptom — a crisp, dead tip or margin — and they need opposite fixes. Misting a plant that's actually suffering from salt buildup does nothing. Switching to expensive distilled water for a plant that's really just being underwatered does nothing. Until you can tell the causes apart, you're guessing. So before any fix, learn to read the brown.
Why the tip browns first: it's the end of the plumbing
Here's the mental model that ties all of this together. A leaf is the far end of the plant's internal water highway. Water is pulled up from the roots, out along the veins, and finally to the very tip and edges of the blade, where it evaporates into the air. The tip is the last stop — the place water reaches last and leaves from.
That has two consequences. First, anything the water is carrying that the plant doesn't want — dissolved salts and minerals — gets carried out to the margins and tips and left behind there as the water evaporates, like a tide line. The tip is where that cargo concentrates. Second, when the plant can't move enough water fast enough, the extremities are the first to run dry, because they're at the end of the line. Either way, whatever is wrong with the plant's water shows up at the tip first and worst. That's why a tip burn is a report about the water — and why the air in your room is usually the wrong place to look.
Cause 1: soluble-salt buildup (the most common, most-misdiagnosed)
Every time you fertilize, and every time you water with tap water that carries dissolved minerals, you leave a little salt behind in the soil. Pure water evaporates from the surface and through the leaves; the salts don't go anywhere. Over months they concentrate in the potting mix. Excess fertilizer salts are then taken up by the plant and accumulate along the leaf margins and tips, where they scorch the tissue from the edge inward — the University of Missouri's plant-diagnostic guidance describes salt damage appearing as exactly this kind of marginal and tip necrosis. Washington State University's extension lists the same picture under "fertilizer burn": browning that starts at the tip and works back along the edges.
The tells that point to salts:
- A whitish or yellowish crust on the surface of the soil, or a crusty ring around the inside of the pot rim or the drainage hole. That crust is the accumulated mineral salt itself — the single most useful sign that this is your problem.
- You fertilize on a schedule (especially "a little every watering") and rarely flush the pot.
- The browning is crispy and dry, on the margins and tips, often across many leaves at once.
The fix isn't to stop watering — it's to wash the salts out, a process growers call leaching. Take the plant to a sink, and pour water slowly through the soil until it runs freely out the drainage hole; keep going so that a generous volume — several times what the pot holds — passes through and carries the dissolved salts out the bottom. Let it drain completely, and pour off anything that collects in the saucer (don't let the plant sit in its own salty runoff). Do that every couple of months if you fertilize regularly, ease off the feeding, and the new growth should come in clean. This is also a place where a real drainage hole earns its keep — you can't flush a pot that can't drain.
Cause 2: your tap water, but only for certain plants
This is where honesty matters, because the internet swings between two wrong extremes: "tap water is fine for everything" and "tap water is poison." The truth is narrower and more useful. For most houseplants, ordinary tap water is genuinely fine — chlorine and fluoride at drinking-water levels are too low to bother them. But a specific handful of popular plants are unusually sensitive to fluoride and chloride, and on those plants tap water produces classic brown tips:
- Spider plant (Chlorophytum)
- Dracaenas, including the "dragon tree" and corn plant
- Ti plant (Cordyline)
- Peace lily
- Calatheas and prayer plants (Maranta)
If your brown-tipping plant is on that list, suspect the water before the air. Switch to rainwater, distilled, or filtered water and watch the new leaves (old damage won't heal).
Cause 3: inconsistent or insufficient watering
If you let a plant's soil go bone-dry for too long, the tips and edges — the end of the plumbing — desiccate first, and they go brown and crispy. The Missouri guidance notes plainly that excessively dry soil for extended periods can itself cause leaf-edge and tip necrosis. This one is easy to confuse with the others because the brown looks the same, so check the context: was the soil bone-dry? Does the plant wilt between waterings? Are you an erratic, "remember it on Sunday" waterer? If so, the fix is consistency, not chemistry — water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil is dry, and don't let it cross into a hard drought between drinks.
There's a subtle trap here worth naming: this looks like the opposite of overwatering, but it often lives in the same pot. People who have read that overwatering is the number-one houseplant killer sometimes overcorrect into chronic underwatering — and now the roots are damaged and the tips are burning for the mirror-image reason. The answer to both is the same: water properly and completely when the plant needs it, in a pot that drains, rather than dribbling or drowning.
Cause 4: actually low humidity (real, but oversold — and misting still won't fix it)
Low humidity can brown leaf tips — it's on every extension's list of possible causes — but it earns its reputation mostly on a small set of genuine humidity-lovers (calatheas, many ferns, some delicate aroids) in dry indoor winter air. Even then, the single most popular response is the one that doesn't work: misting.
A spritz of water raises the humidity immediately around the leaf for a few minutes and then it's gone — it does not meaningfully change the ambient humidity the plant lives in for the other 23 hours and 55 minutes of the day. (On some plants, repeatedly wetting the foliage can also invite fungal leaf-spotting.) If a plant genuinely needs more humidity, the things that actually move the number are grouping plants together, standing the pot on a tray of pebbles and water (the pot sits on the pebbles, not in the water), or running a small humidifier. And the most honest option of all: choose plants suited to your home's real humidity, and stop fighting a desert plant's battle with a tropical species.

One more honest note: trimming the brown is cosmetic
You can absolutely trim brown tips to tidy a plant up — cut with clean scissors following the leaf's natural taper, and leave a hair of brown rather than cutting into living green tissue (slice into the live part and you just create a fresh wound that browns again). But understand what trimming is and isn't: it's grooming, not a cure. If a freshly trimmed leaf grows a new brown edge, the cause is still active — go back to the table and fix the water, not the scissors.
The quick version
A brown tip is the far end of the plant's plumbing reporting a problem with the water — too salty, too harsh for this species, or too little. Look at the soil and the watering before you ever look at the air. Check for a white salt crust and flush the pot; if it's a fluoride-sensitive plant, change your water source for real (sitting tap out doesn't remove fluoride or chloramine); if the soil keeps going bone-dry, water more consistently. Reach for humidity only after you've ruled the water out — and even then, group, tray, or humidify; don't mist. The shortest way to hold all of it: read the soil and the tap before you reach for the mister.
