The clutch is the dial you're ignoring — and why you strip screws

There's a ring of numbers behind your drill's chuck that most people never touch — they crank it to the drill-bit icon and leave it. That collar is the clutch, and ignoring it is the single biggest reason home users strip screw heads, snap screws off flush, and sink fasteners straight through the wood. It takes thirty seconds to learn and it makes you look like you suddenly know what you're doing.

You drive a screw, it sinks too far and tears out the surface; or it stops proud and you lean on the trigger until the head strips into a useless silver crater. You blame the screw, the bit, or yourself. The real culprit is the control you skipped: the clutch, that numbered collar between the chuck and the body. It exists precisely to prevent both failures, and almost nobody uses it.

What the clutch actually does

The clutch is a torque limiter. Set it to a number and the drill will apply turning force only up to that point — then it slips and ratchets (you'll hear the clatter) instead of forcing the screw any harder. Low numbers = it gives up early (little torque), high numbers = it pushes harder before slipping. The whole idea is to let the tool stop driving at exactly the moment the screw is seated flush, so you physically cannot overdrive it no matter how long you hold the trigger.

The numbers are relative, not units. The 1–20-ish figures on the collar aren't torque measurements you can look up — they're just a low-to-high scale for that drill. So you don't memorize a setting; you dial it in for the screw and material in front of you.

What "drill mode" is — and why leaving it there hurts you

Past the highest number is a separate symbol: a drill bit (and sometimes a hammer icon). That's drill mode, and it defeats the clutch entirely — full torque, no slipping, the tool will twist until something gives. That's correct for drilling holes, where you want uninterrupted power and there's no screw head to protect. But people leave the collar in drill mode for everything, including driving screws — which is exactly the setting with no overdrive protection. That's why the screw strips, snaps, or buries itself: you took off the safety and pulled the trigger.

The other half: cam-out

Stripping has a partner problem called cam-out — when the bit rides up and out of the screw head under load, chewing the head and the bit tip. It's made worse by too much torque (no clutch), a worn or wrong-size bit, and not enough steady downward pressure to keep the bit seated. The clutch helps by cutting the force before cam-out gets violent; a matched, sharp bit and firm, in-line pressure do the rest. You don't guess. You calibrate on a test piece or the first fastener:

The short version

The numbered collar is a torque-limiting clutch: dial in a number and the drill stops driving once the screw is seated, instead of overdriving it. The numbers are a relative low-to-high scale, not units; the drill-bit icon is drill mode, which switches the clutch off for boring holes — and leaving it there is why you strip and snap screws. Start low, climb until a screw seats just flush, lock it there. It's the most useful control on the tool and the one nobody touches. For the fasteners the clutch can't tame, you want the brute force of an impact driver.
