The PVC Flip That Quietly Ruins Coins — and the One Time You Intervene

Most coins aren't ruined in a moment. They're ruined slowly, in storage, by the soft plastic holder that was supposed to protect them. If your coins live in flips that bend easily and feel a little greasy, they may be dissolving right now — and you won't notice until the green shows up.

There are two kinds of "coin flip" sold side by side, and they look almost identical on the rack. One protects your coin for decades. The other slowly destroys it. The difference is the plastic, and the trap is that the destructive one is usually cheaper, clearer, and softer — so it feels like the nicer product.

This is the storage half of the rule we cover in why you never clean a coin. There, the lesson is don't touch the surface. Here it's the strange exception: PVC damage is the one common situation where leaving a coin completely alone is the wrong call — because the damage is ongoing, and it keeps eating until you stop it.

What's actually happening inside the flip

Soft, flexible vinyl flips are made of PVC — polyvinyl chloride. To make rigid PVC soft and bendy, manufacturers add plasticizers. Those plasticizers are not chemically locked into the plastic; over time, especially with heat and humidity, they migrate out of the flip and onto whatever is touching it — your coin. As the residue sits and breaks down, it becomes acidic and begins to etch the metal surface.

The visible result is the classic warning sign: a green, hazy, sometimes iridescent film on the coin, usually appearing first around the rim and the recessed areas where residue pools. People call it "PVC slime" or "green goo." By the time it is clearly green, the chemical reaction has already been at work for a while. It is not dirt and it will not wipe off — wiping it just grinds it into the surface and adds hairlines on top of the etching.

The grading-service reality: "PVC Damage" is a specific designation the major services use. NGC lists it among its problem-coin descriptions; a coin with PVC etching will not straight-grade — it returns flagged, in the same lower market as a cleaned coin. So this isn't cosmetic. Bad storage caps a coin's value exactly the way cleaning does.

How to tell a killer flip from a safe one

You do not need to read a label or trust a marketing claim. The plastic tells you what it is:

The cruel part is that the soft PVC flip is genuinely more pleasant to handle — it's clear, it's flexible, it doesn't crack. That comfort is exactly why it's the default in junk drawers and inherited collections. If you've just received a box of old coins in soft clear sleeves, assume PVC until proven otherwise and plan to move them.

The one time you touch the coin — and why it isn't cleaning

If you catch active PVC residue, doing nothing means the etching continues. This is the narrow exception to "leave the surface alone." But notice what the intervention actually is: you are halting a chemical reaction with a solvent, not polishing for looks.

The accepted method is a soak in pure acetone — the plain hardware-store kind, in a glass (not plastic) container. Not nail-polish remover, which contains added oils, fragrances, and water that leave their own residue. Acetone dissolves the organic PVC plasticizer and carries it away, and it does not chemically react with gold, silver, copper, or nickel, so it lifts the contaminant without abrading the struck surface. The discipline that makes it conservation rather than cleaning:

The honest limit: acetone removes the residue. It cannot undo etching. If the plasticizer has already eaten into the metal, removing the green film reveals tiny pits where the surface is permanently gone. The acetone stopped the bleeding; it didn't heal the wound. For a coin you suspect is valuable, the right move is to stabilize it out of the PVC and send it to a professional conservation service (such as NGC's NCS) rather than experimenting yourself.

"Airtight" is not the same as "inert"

One last trap worth naming, because it catches careful people: sealing a coin away does not help if you seal it in the wrong plastic. An airtight soft-PVC holder just traps the coin with its own outgassing plasticizer and the humidity — sometimes accelerating the damage. The property that matters is the material of whatever touches the coin (inert vs. PVC), not how tightly it's closed. Choose the right plastic first; worry about the seal second.

What to do tonight

  1. Triage the collection. Pull anything in soft, bendy, clear flips. Bend-test and smell-test. Anything soft and plasticky is a candidate to move.
  2. Look for green. Tilt each coin under a light and check the rim and recesses for green or hazy film. Found some? That coin needs attention, not a wipe.
  3. Rehouse into inert holders. Mylar-insert 2x2s, PVC-free flips, or acrylic capsules. Handle by the edges.
  4. Treat active residue carefully — or hand it off. Pure-acetone soak for common coins you're comfortable handling; professional conservation for anything that might be worth real money.
  5. Store cool and dry. Heat and humidity are the accelerants. A stable indoor spot beats an attic or basement.

Coins don't usually die from one dramatic event. They die from years in the wrong plastic. The cheapest insurance in the hobby is getting them into the right holder before the green ever appears.
