A humming disposal that won't grind is one of the most over-paid-for problems in the kitchen. People hear it, decide the motor is shot, and replace a unit that had years of life left — or pay a tradesperson a call-out fee to do the thing you're about to learn to do yourself. The reason the mistake is so common is that nobody ever explained what the hum actually means.
Here's the reframe that turns a scary noise into a two-minute job: the hum is a diagnosis, not a death rattle. If the motor is humming, electricity is reaching it and it is trying to turn. A motor that hums but doesn't spin is almost always jammed — something is wedged against the moving parts and the motor can't overcome it. A truly dead motor doesn't hum. It does nothing. So before you spend a cent, read the sound.
First, understand there are no blades
This one fact reorganizes everything that follows. Most people picture a garbage disposal as a blender bolted under the sink — spinning blades chopping up scraps. It isn't. The manufacturer InSinkErator says it plainly: "Many people think a garbage disposal works like a blender, with spinning blades chopping and breaking down the waste. In reality garbage disposals work in a different way – and there are NO blades involved."
What's actually down there is a flat spinning plate with two blunt metal tabs on it — impellers, sometimes called lugs — that swivel freely. The plate spins fast and centrifugal force flings the food outward against a fixed, toothed ring around the wall of the chamber: the grind ring. The ring is what does the work, shredding the waste into fine particles until water can wash them through. The impellers don't cut; they throw. Nothing down there is sharp.
Once you know that, two things stop being mysterious. First, the things that jam a disposal jam it by wedging the impellers or the plate — a fruit pit, a bone, a stray spoon, a wad of fibrous peel. Second, "sharpening the blades" is a myth, because there are no blades to sharpen. Hold onto both; we'll come back to them.
The free fix, step by step
Two tools live with every disposal for this exact moment: a reset button (usually red, on the underside of the unit) and a small hex wrench (an Allen key, commonly 1/4″ — check yours) that fits a socket in the dead center of the bottom. If you've lost the wrench, a standard 1/4″ Allen key from any hardware store fits most units. Here's the order that actually works:
- Turn it off and let it cool. If it tripped on overload, the reset button may not stay pushed in until the motor cools — give it a few minutes.
- Free the flywheel from below. Under the sink, find the hex socket in the center of the disposal's bottom. Insert the wrench and work it firmly back and forth, both directions. You're manually turning the plate to break the jam loose. When it suddenly spins freely a full circle with no resistance, the jam is cleared.
- (No bottom socket?) Free it from above. Some models don't have the bottom hole. With the power off, put the end of a wooden spoon or a broom handle down into the chamber, brace it against one of the impeller tabs, and lever the plate around until it turns freely. A tool — never your hand.
- Fish out the culprit. Look in with a flashlight and remove whatever was wedged — pit, bone shard, bottle cap, that long-lost teaspoon — with tongs or pliers, not fingers.
- Press the reset button. Reach under and push the reset button in until it stays. This re-arms the motor's overload protection, which the jam had tripped.
- Restore power and test with cold water running. Turn the breaker and switch back on, run a moderate stream of cold water, and flip it on. It should spin and clear.
Read the symptom — it names the fix
Not every dead disposal is a jam. The trick is that the way it fails to work points straight at the cause. Match what you've got to the table before you touch anything.

What actually kills disposals — and the myths that don't help
Now that you know it throws rather than cuts, the list of real enemies makes sense. None of them is about "power" or "sharpness."
- Fibrous, stringy waste — celery, corn husks, artichoke leaves, onion skins. The strands wrap around the impellers and the plate instead of being flung off. This is the classic jammer.
- Starchy waste — potato peels, pasta, rice. It doesn't jam so much as turn to paste that clings to the grind ring and sets up like cement in the trap below. Feed these in tiny amounts with lots of water, or bin them.
- Grease and fat — goes down warm and liquid, congeals solid as it cools downstream, and narrows the pipe over months. The disposal grinds it fine; the drain is where it bites.
- Hard objects — bones, fruit pits, glass, and the cutlery that slides in unseen. These wedge the plate outright. (Small soft bones are sometimes recommended to scour a sluggish unit — but a beef bone or a peach pit just jams it.)
Run cold water, not hot
This is the counterintuitive one. Hot water feels like it should help dissolve grease — and it does, briefly, which is the problem: it liquefies fat so it slips past the disposal and re-solidifies deeper in the pipe where you can't reach it. InSinkErator's guidance is to run cold water during and for a few seconds after grinding. Cold keeps fats solid so they break into particles and flush through with everything else, and the flow carries the ground waste out instead of letting it settle.
The "ice and lemons sharpen it" myth
You'll read everywhere that grinding ice cubes sharpens the blades. There are no blades, so nothing gets sharpened — but the advice isn't worthless, it's just mislabeled. Grinding ice (some add coarse salt) can knock loose the gunk built up on the impellers and chamber walls, which is real cleaning. Lemon or citrus peel freshens the smell; it doesn't clean or sharpen anything. Use them for what they actually do, and don't expect a tired unit to grind better because you fed it ice.
When it really is time to replace it
Be honest with yourself after the free fix. A disposal has genuinely reached the end when: you've cleared any jam and confirmed power, and it still only hums or trips the reset immediately; it makes a persistent grinding-metal screech with nothing in it (the plate or ring is damaged); or it leaks from the body itself rather than a connection. At that point replacement is the right call, and choosing the right horsepower, grind stages, and noise level is worth a few minutes — but get there by ruling out the jam first, not by assuming it.
