Hot throw, cold throw, and the fragrance-load math nobody explains
8% vs 10% vs 12% fragrance load. What changes. When customers can tell the difference. The cost math on every percentage point.
Two technical terms candle customers don't know but evaluate constantly:
- Cold throw: how strongly an unlit candle scents the room. The smell when you walk past the candle in a shop or open the lid in your house.
- Hot throw: how strongly a lit candle scents the room. The "does this candle actually work" test.
Most underperforming candles fail at hot throw. The candle looks beautiful, smells great when you open the lid (cold throw is fine), but when you light it, nothing happens. The customer doesn't buy again.
The fix is fragrance load — and most candle makers are running theirs too low.
What fragrance load is
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil to total wax weight. A 16oz container with 8% fragrance load = 14.7oz wax + 1.3oz fragrance.
The number sounds like a small detail. It's the difference between a $4 fragrance bill per candle and a $1.20 fragrance bill. It's also the difference between a candle that throws and one that doesn't.
The fragrance load matrix

The cost difference between 8% (often used) and 10% (recommended) is $0.20 per 8oz candle. The throw improvement is dramatic. Most candle makers are saving $0.20 to lose the customer.
The wax-specific maximum loads
Different waxes accept different maximum fragrance loads. Going over the max produces frosting, sweating, or fragrance pooling on the wax surface.

Cold throw vs hot throw — the design decision
Each fragrance has its own hot/cold throw character. Some fragrances throw heavily cold (great in the candle on the shelf) but quietly hot. Others are the opposite.
Examples:
- Strong cold + weak hot: Many citrus oils (lemon, orange). Volatile top notes dissipate when heated.
- Weak cold + strong hot: Many "warm" fragrances (vanilla, sandalwood, leather). Base notes need heat to activate.
- Balanced (ideal): Most professionally-formulated candle fragrance oils. Aim for these.
When buying fragrance oils, the supplier should disclose hot-throw rating (low/medium/strong). If they don't, test a small batch before scaling.
The testing protocol
Three-stage fragrance test before launching a new scent:
- Cold throw test (day 1): Pour 4oz mini in standard jar. After 48 hour cure, open and smell. Score 1-10.
- Hot throw test (day 7): Light the test candle. Sit 6 feet away in a closed 12x12 room. Score scent strength at 5, 15, 30, and 60 minutes.
- Cure-test (day 14, 21, 30): Some fragrances strengthen with cure; others fade. Re-test at each interval to find the optimal "ready to ship" date.
Skipping this and going straight to a 30-batch production run is how you end up with 30 candles that don't throw. Customers don't return, reviews drop, the line dies.
The "stronger fragrance" trap
Beginning candle makers often respond to weak throw by going to 13-14% fragrance load. This rarely works. The wax can't hold the extra fragrance, you get pooling and sweating, and customers complain about quality issues.
The fix for weak throw isn't more fragrance — it's:
- Different wax (higher-throw paraffin or coconut blend)
- Different fragrance supplier (some FOs are formulated for stronger throw)
- Lower-quality wick (wider melt pool = more fragrance release)
- Different fragrance composition (warm/base-note fragrances throw better hot)
The cost-of-fragrance reality
Fragrance is the second-most-expensive material in most candles (after the jar). For a wholesale-scaled production:

Premium fragrances (CandleScience Specialty Line, Sweet Cakes, Aztec) cost 2-3x generic fragrances ($35-50/lb vs $25/lb). For premium-tier candle lines, this is worth it. For mass-tier candles, generic fragrance at higher load (10% generic vs 8% premium) often outperforms.
