Farmers markets vs online vs wholesale: the honest channel mix
$22/lb at farmers market. $14/lb online. $9/lb wholesale. The breakdown of where the volume comes from and where the margin lives.

Honey sells through different channels with dramatically different per-jar pricing. A jar that sells for $14 at a Saturday farmers market sells for $9 wholesale to a local store. Same jar. The right channel mix depends on your hive count, your time availability, and your local market.
The four channels worth running
| Channel | Price (per lb) | Volume potential | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Farmers market | $18-22 | 15-40 lbs/event | Direct customer relationships, premium pricing |
| Direct online (your site) | $14-18 | 10-30 lbs/month, slow ramp | Repeat customers, shipping-friendly |
| Local boutique wholesale | $8-10 | 30-100 lbs/month per store | Volume, low time investment |
| Restaurant accounts | $9-12 | 15-50 lbs/month per account | Steady recurring revenue |
| Subscription / honey club | $16-20 | 5-20 lbs/month per subscriber | Predictable revenue, loyal customers |
The farmers market reality
Farmers markets are the highest per-pound channel. They're also time-intensive: setup at 7am, sell until 1pm, tear down. A typical 6-hour day at a $35 booth fee with 30 jars sold at $14 each produces $385 net revenue. That's ~$50/hour during the market β strong rate but only available 1-2 days/week.
The constraint: farmers market season runs April-October in most US markets. November-March, you need different channels.
The online direct reality
Online sales (Shopify direct or Etsy) produce lower per-jar margin but year-round revenue. Shipping costs eat $4-6 per order, which means online orders work best for: 2+ jar orders, premium gift sets, and subscription customers. Single 12oz jar online sales lose money.
The wholesale economics
Wholesale to local boutiques and gift shops produces volume at lower margin. $8-10 per pound wholesale vs $18-22 retail. Wholesale doubles or triples your monthly volume but cuts per-unit margin in half.
The clear math: a beekeeper with 25 hives producing 1,200 lbs annually can sell 600 lbs retail (~$11,000 revenue) + 600 lbs wholesale (~$5,400 revenue) for $16,400 total β vs 1,200 lbs at retail-only that's impossible to actually move ($22,000 theoretical but unrealistic).
The recommended progression
