The sculptural art economy
Sculptural ceramic art โ one-of-one pieces, gallery placements, art-show inventory โ has dramatically different economics from functional pottery. Pieces sell at $200-$5,000+ each, but volume is low: a successful gallery potter may sell 12-30 pieces per year.
Gallery commission rates are brutal: galleries take 40-60% of retail. So a $1,200 sculpture nets $480-720 to the artist. Per-piece labor can be 40-80 hours. The economics work only at premium pricing.
