Studio rental vs home studio: the honest economics
Community studio ($150-400/month) vs home setup ($3,000-15,000). The breakeven by production volume.

Most potters start at community studios. At some point, the math suggests buying your own equipment. Here's when that math actually works.
Community studio reality
Typical US community studio (pottery co-op, community college, art center) charges $150-400/month for membership. What you get:
- Wheel access (often shared, scheduled time)
- Kiln firing (usually unlimited or generous bisque + glaze allowances)
- Tool/equipment use
- Clay and glazes (sometimes included, often discounted)
What you don't get: privacy, unlimited schedule, the ability to leave work in progress overnight without it being moved, and ownership of your own setup.

Community studio at $300/month over 3 years = $10,800 — more than a full home studio setup. But that assumes you produce enough to justify owning.
Hidden costs of home studio
- Insurance. A kiln in a home garage requires insurance disclosure. Many homeowners policies exclude or restrict kiln operations. Specific business insurance: $400-800/year.
- Electricity cost. Running a kiln 4x per month adds $40-80/month to your electric bill.
- Ventilation requirements. Kilns produce CO and other gases. Proper ventilation isn't optional.
- Zoning. Most residential zoning permits hobby kiln use. Commercial-scale production (selling $20k+/year) may exceed home occupation limits.
