The recurring client model: real estate, corporate, branded content
Wedding photographers work one-time clients. Real estate photographers serve realtors weekly. The honest model that produces predictable income.

Wedding photography is glamorous but financially brutal: every client is one-time, marketing has to constantly produce new leads, and the busy season is concentrated 6 months a year.
The recurring-client model flips this. Same clients, same cadence, predictable income, lower marketing cost.
The four recurring-client categories
| Category | Cadence | Per-shoot | Annual potential (one client) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real estate (per realtor) | Weekly to monthly | $150-400 | $8k-25k |
| Corporate headshots (rolling) | Monthly cycles | $200-500 per person | $10k-40k |
| Branded social content | Monthly retainer | $1,500-4,500/month | $18k-54k |
| Family portrait family (annual) | Annual | $400-1,500 | $5k-15k from 10-20 family clients |
| Food brand content | Quarterly campaigns | $1,500-5,000 | $6k-20k per brand |
The marketing math advantage
Customer acquisition cost (CAC) for new wedding client: $200-800 (Google ads, The Knot listings, social media management).
CAC for retaining a real-estate client into year 2: $0 (they call you). For getting 1 referral to another realtor: $0 (they introduce you).
A real-estate photographer with 8 active realtor accounts can produce $200,000+ annual revenue with $0-200/month marketing cost. A wedding photographer producing equivalent revenue typically spends $400-1,200/month on marketing.
How to land your first recurring accounts
- Identify the target. For real estate: top-producing realtors in your area. For corporate: HR managers at companies with 100+ employees. For brands: marketing managers at local restaurants/brands.
- Sample shoot. Free or at-cost first shoot to demonstrate quality. For real estate, this is often just a $75-100 trial listing.
- Volume pricing structure. First listing $250, second listing $225, ongoing $175. Reward commitment.
- Recurring shoot date. "I'm in your area Tuesdays" or "Weekly slot is Wednesday morning." Predictable schedule.
- Same-day or next-day turnaround. Realtors and brands need fast delivery. Slow turnaround is the #1 reason recurring accounts churn.
The hybrid model that works
Many photographers run a hybrid: 70% recurring (real estate or branded content) + 30% special events (weddings, family portraits). The recurring side produces predictable income that funds the higher-margin special events.
This produces $100k-200k annual revenue with much less marketing stress than pure event photography. Most photographers who actually build sustainable businesses end up in some version of this.
