Pricing detailing by vehicle class: why one menu loses money on both ends

Pricing detailing by vehicle class: why one menu loses money on both ends

Charging $200 for a Civic and $200 for a Tahoe means losing money on one of them. The vehicle-class pricing matrix that captures real margins and stops the race to the bottom.

Most detailing menus look like this: Basic Wash $80, Full Detail $200, Premium $350. Same prices for every vehicle. This is the single biggest revenue leak in the industry.

A full detail on a 2-door Civic takes 4 hours, uses $15 in materials, and a 90-second drying step covers the entire panel area. A full detail on an Escalade ESV takes 7 hours, uses $35 in materials, and the drying step alone takes 12 minutes. Same price means the Civic pays for the Escalade.

The vehicle-class matrix that works

The honest pricing structure has both service tier AND vehicle class. Four classes covers 95% of vehicles cleanly:

ClassExamplesMultiplier
Class 1Compact/2-door sedans (Civic, Corolla, Miata, Mini)0.85x
Class 2Mid-size sedans (Camry, Accord, 3-Series, Model 3)1.00x (base)
Class 3SUVs, trucks, mid-size SUVs (CR-V, RAV4, F-150, Tahoe)1.30x
Class 4Full-size SUVs/trucks/vans (Escalade ESV, Sprinter, Yukon XL)1.55x

A "Full Detail" priced at $200 base becomes:

The Civic owner feels they got a deal. The Escalade owner accepts the higher price because the vehicle is obviously bigger. Both pay rates that match your actual time and materials.

Why operators resist vehicle-class pricing

The pushback is always the same: "It looks complicated." It doesn't. Customers self-select their class when they enter make/model on your booking form. The form auto-calculates the price. No phone-call negotiation, no confusion.

The real reason operators resist is fear of losing the truck/SUV customer to the next operator down the road. That fear is mostly false. Truck and SUV owners know their vehicles take more work. They expect to pay more. The operator who charges flat rates is the one losing money, not the one charging by class.

Premium-class adjustments

Beyond the four standard classes, three categories warrant additional pricing:

The package + class matrix

A complete pricing structure has 3-4 tiers and 4 vehicle classes — 12-16 price points total. That sounds like a lot. It isn't. Auto-calculate on the website.

ServiceBase (Class 2)Class 1Class 3Class 4
Maintenance wash$60$50$78$93
Full detail (interior + exterior)$200$170$260$310
One-step paint correction$400$340$520$620
Two-step correction + 1yr coating$700$595$910$1085
Two-step + 5yr ceramic coating$1200$1020$1560$1860

The competitor-price argument

"Operator X charges $150 flat for a full detail." Two things to think about. First, are they actually still in business in 2 years? The race-to-the-bottom operators don't last. Second, is that what you want to be?

Vehicle-class pricing puts you on a different competitive axis. You're not competing on price — you're competing on professionalism, transparency, and matching value to vehicle. The customer who picks the $150 flat-rate operator was never your customer.
