Kegging vs bottling: the honest break-even
Kegging saves 4 hours per batch but costs $300 setup. The clear math by batch frequency. Plus the underrated bottling tip nobody mentions.
Every home brewer thinks about kegging within the first six months. The pitch is compelling: instead of cleaning, sanitizing, filling, and capping 50 bottles per batch, you transfer once to a keg, set the regulator, and pour cold beer two weeks later.
The reality is more nuanced. Here's the clear math.
What kegging actually costs
The minimum kegging setup, in 2024 dollars:

If you want a kegerator (a converted fridge to keep the keg cold), add $150-400 for the fridge and conversion parts. Most people start with a chest freezer with a temp controller ($250 total).
Time savings per batch

Kegging saves about 2 hours of active time per batch. If you brew 6 batches a year, that's 12 hours saved annually.
The honest break-even
If your time is worth $25/hour, kegging pays back the $300 setup at:
- 1 batch/month: 12 months (12 batches × 2 hours × $25 = $600 saved)
- 1 batch every 2 months: 24 months
- 1 batch per quarter: 48 months
For brewers under 6 batches a year, kegging doesn't pay back economically. It still might be worth it for the convenience, but the math doesn't support it as cost-saving.
What the math doesn't capture
Three things kegging gives you that bottling can't:
- Force carbonation flexibility. Bottle carbonation is fixed at whatever volumes of CO2 the priming sugar produces. Kegging lets you carb to taste — lower for stouts, higher for German pilsners.
- Reduced exposure to oxygen. Bottle filling introduces oxygen that ages beer faster. Closed-transfer kegging (CO2 push) keeps oxygen out. Hop-forward beers especially benefit.
- Drinking convenience. Picnic tap or proper draft system means no opening 12 bottles when friends come over. The social aspect matters.
The underrated bottling tip
Most bottling time is consumed by handling individual bottles. Two changes cut bottling time roughly in half:
- Use 22oz "bomber" bottles. Half the number of bottles to clean, sanitize, fill, and cap. The 22oz size is also a more reasonable serving for sharing.
- Buy a bench capper, not a wing capper. $35 investment that takes the strain off your hands and caps consistently. Wing cappers crack bottles when the lip is uneven.
For a low-frequency brewer, optimized bottling beats sub-optimized kegging.
Hybrid setup
Some brewers keep both. The keg handles whatever batch is currently being drunk. The bottling kit handles batches you want to age or take to friends. This works fine if you have space; one keg covers most needs.
The honest recommendation
Brewing 1-3 batches a year: stay with bottles. Buy a bench capper and use 22oz bombers.
Brewing 4-8 batches a year: convertible decision. If convenience matters more than money, keg. If money matters more, stay with bottles and optimize.
Brewing 8+ batches a year: keg. The time savings are real and the carbonation control is worth it.
